What do you think about Loveday?

We've got a run of the mill surname and I'm considering this. DH also Cornish but many won't get the Cornish connection and might think it is an American made up type name?

It's brave, but I don't see why you should just go for it.....

Tortington · 20/09/2010 09:55

fking mad

Threelittleducks · 20/09/2010 10:00

No no no....the child has to go to school!
Might sound nice in a novel, nice when you are explaining to folk when dc is born about the meaning etc, but in rl kids (and adults) are very very closed-minded and cruel.

NiceShoes · 20/09/2010 10:04

Know a male Loveday,He is African,a beautiful name.

BuntyPenfold · 20/09/2010 10:26

I love it too

B52s · 20/09/2010 13:55

It is a surname. Don't do it.

expatinscotland · 20/09/2010 13:58

Oh, god, what is wrong with a normal name? So what if your surname is 'run of the mill', why do you need to burden your child with something ridiculous to be 'unique'?

nameymcnamechange · 20/09/2010 14:12

Loveday is an utterly normal traditional name. It is not made up. I just isn't used very widely.

nameymcnamechange · 20/09/2010 14:13

But, obviously, judging from the last few posts, I was wrong earlier when I said that most people would know it is a traditional Cornish name Grin!

expatinscotland · 20/09/2010 14:15

Yes, well, Walter is a normal name, too, but it's not in common use much anymore because it's naff.

Like Loveday.

nameymcnamechange · 20/09/2010 14:18

Aww, I know a lovely little Walter. 10 years old. His Mom is American Grin.

Faaamily · 20/09/2010 14:36

I love it, but you'd have to be brave! Not many people will know the Cornish connections and you'll /she'll be getting raised eyebrows forever.

DastardlyandSmugly · 20/09/2010 14:48

I absolutely love it. Is on my list if I ever have another DD.

deliakate · 21/09/2010 12:47

Late to the party, but I know an older lady named Loveday, and its very pretty. I do think that name goes better with an unusual surname however, as it can sometimes sound a little jarring putting an unusual name with a very plain sur.

Kathleen123 · 21/09/2010 15:50

Yes, but there must be a cornish connection, or it is just silly.

So if your cornish - excellent choice.

Kathleen123 · 21/09/2010 15:52

Just read that you are Cornish - lovely name for your daughter.

I read a book, set in Cornwall, with a Loveday in as a child, and have loved the name ever since.

xx

CornishKK · 21/09/2010 16:05

I love it, we had one Loveday at school, she wasn't teased about her name as far as I recall.

It's on my sister's name list at the moment along with Lamorna.

Morwenna and Jenna are nice but very over used in my area.

TBH, anything is better than Endellion. Smile

TooBlessedToBeStressed · 21/09/2010 20:30

:o

MrsFlittersnoop · 21/09/2010 20:58

Is it just me or does Endellion sound like a boy's name? Reminds me of Enys Confused.

Loveday is cute, but not sure about using it as a first name outside Cornwall. It was traditionally a popular name in the Cornish Methodist community I believe, like Charity, Hope, Prudence etc. There is a Loveday in the Poldark novels too Smile.

Pan · 10/01/2013 19:27

Loveday is a startlingly beautiful name. When dd was born I really wanted it, but her mum didn't. So we compromised. And called her something else.Grin She wanted Hermione. That didn't happen either.

schroedingersdodo · 11/01/2013 12:06

Saintjohn is also a traditional name (I don't know the right spelling though), but it doesn't make it sound less silly.

atthewelles · 11/01/2013 13:18

For some reason Loveday reminds me of an Angela Brazil type really old fashioned school story - the kind I used to pick up at sales of work when I was a child and were really, really dated even then.

I don't like it, by the way.

Pasiphae · 11/01/2013 13:46

I like it but I am not sure whether I would like being the one called that. it creates too much reactions. It's like Marmite.

It's a brave choice, for sure. It would do a great middle name.
