We've got a run of the mill surname and I'm considering this. DH also Cornish but many won't get the Cornish connection and might think it is an American made up type name?

Oh, it's a lovely name. I first heard of it in a Rosamunde Pilcher novel ("Coming Home") as someone mentioned above, and I think it's charming.

hullygully · 23/09/2009 16:48

Snice

mathanxiety · 23/09/2009 16:49

I think it's gorgeous.

OrmIrian · 23/09/2009 16:49

I like it. Reminds me of the Little White Horse.

TheHeadbangingWombat · 23/09/2009 16:52

Awful.

KnickersandVests · 23/09/2009 16:53

My best friend's middle name is Loveday and as children we both thought it was a bit ridiculous and her hippy mum had got carried away when she had named her but now I, and my best friend, think it's quite pretty.

You will, I'm afraid, leave the child open to much teasing though.

PortBlacksandResident · 23/09/2009 16:53

I really really like it.

For an alternative Cornish name how about Ginsters - Ginny for short?

pranma · 23/09/2009 16:54

Duchessof Avon LWH is one of my favourite books and Loveday Minette is such a wonderful character that I cant dislike the name.Word of warning the film-'Mystery of Moonacre'is horrible!!

hullygully · 23/09/2009 16:54

Pie, anyone?

It's a beautiful name.

IWantCleanCarpets · 23/09/2009 17:18

Urghhhh

Nekabu · 23/09/2009 17:23

Love it. Very traditional Cornish name and I know three, ranging from 6 to 72 in age!

MaMight · 23/09/2009 17:26

Lovely Cornish name. Thumbs up.

Cortina · 25/09/2009 13:10

That's interesting, re: definition. Thanks.

Now thinking of Lowdy Now 'Howdy, Lowdy' is playing out in my head I suspect 'Loveday' might sound like 'Lowdy' with a Cornish accent.

Dont like it at all sorry

pinkthechaffinch · 25/09/2009 13:20

Love it, and I loved 'the little white horse too'

KERALA1 · 25/09/2009 13:50

My sisters friend has a stepdaughter named this. Sorry but have to be honest generally people laugh at the name on first hearing, I wouldnt want that for my little girl. My sisters friend is embarrassed to call out the name when she takes the stepdaughter to the park.

I am a fan of outside the top 10 names and originality but I do think this is going abit too far. Sorry.

scroobiuspirate · 25/09/2009 13:51

no no no

Scorps · 25/09/2009 13:59

I like Loveday, know a couple, probably as i live in Cornwall. Other girls Cornish names

Talwyn
Tean
Teagan
Demelza
Hepzibah
Lowenna (?)

Cornish place names

Morvah
Lamorna
Sennen (poss more for a boy)

Cortina · 25/09/2009 14:05

Like Demelza (but am old enough to remember Poldark) and Hepzibah (but think there's a famous journalist which I immediately think of).

Nice suggestions, thanks

Morvah is interesting.

KERALA1 · 25/09/2009 14:38

Kerenza. Any of Scorps names. Just not Loveday please its not fair unless perhaps you live in Cornwall and anticipate that your daughter will never leave at all during her life.

Persephoponce · 25/09/2009 18:33

I think it's totally lovely . I never knew it was Cornish. I know an absolutely stunning woman with this name - Loveday Maddox (if you are on MN, show yourself! ). Makes me love it even more.

Demelza is gorgeous, too, although I'd cringe at the nickname Demi...

wildfig · 03/10/2009 23:33

i knew a girl called Loveday Cumming at university.

(Yes, the teasing was mighty. But then we got used to it.)

sophietom · 03/10/2009 23:45

I grew up in Cornwall and have never met a Loveday... sorry but think she would be teased
If you are looking for a Cornish girls name Morwenna and Jenna are nice IMO
