What's the first thing that springs to mind when you hear Asa? is it 'different but nice' or 'chav'. Straw poll please, thanks.

Amateur Swimming Association.

MrsBadger · 18/09/2009 11:53

made up

sweetnitanitro · 18/09/2009 11:53

It does sound like an acronym for something, sorry.

mumofthreetobe · 18/09/2009 11:58

It's biblical. Hebrew for healer and means morning in Japanese apparently. Did wonder if it was too far out, but don't want DS having a name the same as 4 other boys in his class.

Hebrew, and also Spanish for handle. No me gusta.

Sunbeammama · 18/09/2009 12:01

Bit nondescipt for me, so not keen sorry. I don't think Chav though. But if you like it go for it.

mumofthreetobe · 18/09/2009 12:02

mumofthreetobe · 18/09/2009 12:05

Asa Briggs, venerable historian of the Victorians and of the media.

ShowOfHands · 18/09/2009 12:11

I really like it. Ignore the naysayers. Is a great name.

Chunkamatic · 18/09/2009 12:13

Is there another, legitimate, way to spell it? I really like it but having seen some of the comments about acronyms I can see that now.

It was on the long list for my DS.

GrungeBlobPrimpants · 18/09/2009 12:17

Oh yes I recall reading Asa Briggs's books (fab)

Was under the impression it was a girls name until years later

MamaLazarou · 18/09/2009 13:51

It doesn't seem like a real name to me.

I am sure it is, though: it just doesn't sound it.

It definitely sounds like a girls' name.

janx · 18/09/2009 14:12

my daughter went to nursery with a gorgeous, clever boy called Asa....I like it

AttilaTheMeerkat · 18/09/2009 14:21

Its different yes but perhaps a step too far really. Don't saddle him with such a name.

Asa - Advertising Standards Authority.

mathanxiety · 18/09/2009 14:36

Great name. I love it. I think it's biblical?

1 week to go and can't decide on boy's name. We already have a Lily and a Toby, and my top 2 choices at the mo are Oliver or Samuel. Any thoughts??
