What do you think of the name Martha?

Becoming common...

southernbelle77 · 14/09/2009 15:22

Really like it, but it is becoming quite popular if that bothers you.

bigchris · 14/09/2009 15:23

i like it

i know one

BitOfFun · 14/09/2009 15:28

Hmm, Martha in the Bible puts me off tbh. Doesn't she run round like a little servant being all martyrish when Jesus visits, and then have a rant at ther sister for being a lazy fecker just listening to him instead of washing up?

midnightexpress · 14/09/2009 15:30

Love it. It sounds kind of American to me - I imagine home baking and handmade quilts. In a good way.

MrsBadger · 14/09/2009 15:34

I know several

popular but quite nice

nickelbabe · 14/09/2009 15:34

i like the name.

BoF: i always thought she had a good point in that though: the emphasis in those times was for women to spend all their time looking after men's needs, so she was only doing that.
but i bet jesus didn't think that he would help with washing up later when he'd finished the story.

Pannacotta · 14/09/2009 15:36

I really like it, had we had a girl she would have been Martha.
Sounds gutsy/spirited to me...

cockles · 14/09/2009 15:42

meek and domestic

duelingfanjo · 14/09/2009 15:43

I love it, but it is common as in used a lot.

I have a Martha - she's an adult now but as a little girl there was a confusing phase where she found it difficult to say her name (along with a couple of her friends) and so for a while she was Arthur to some.

I love Martha, it just has a lovely sound to it and is a great grown-up name too. Feminine without being sickly sweet like a lot of girls' names. You can imagine Martha being a ballerina or a high court judge.

It's not too try-hard either - IMO good taste always trumps a burning desire to prove your fascinating originality!

Love it

Disenchanted3 · 14/09/2009 17:14

Only if your surname is not Phucker.

newmomma · 15/09/2009 10:22

LOVE IT!

persephoneplum · 15/09/2009 11:45

It's a little fusty and homely for my tastes, but I certainly don't dislike it

sockmonkey · 15/09/2009 11:57

I tried to talk DH into Martha for this bump, but he's having none of it.
I really like it, and it is becoming popular.
LOL at disenchanted

ramonaquimby · 15/09/2009 12:00

know one martha in year 2.
thats it

so not terribly 'common' or 'popular' unlessthe little martha's aren't yet school age!

ShowOfHands · 15/09/2009 12:00

It's beautiful, sounds lovely but oh it's popular now. Which is because it's beautiful obviously but a consideration maybe.

Bucharest · 15/09/2009 12:02

It's all right. Part of the new holy trinity of Ms. Martha-Mathilda-Madeleine (although the latter seems to have fallen from favour for mawkish reasons)

Fanfare · 15/09/2009 12:06

Such a gorgeous name, my all-time fave. It is becoming more popular, but that said it was still only ranked 81 last year, so hardly up there with the Rubys and Olivias.

Megglevache · 15/09/2009 12:07

I think it's very pretty.

Patsy99 · 15/09/2009 13:51

It's a good name. Pretty without being middle class twee and boring. Don't see how it can be so very common given its place in the rankings.

shopaholicJen · 15/09/2009 21:03

Lovely
