I admit it, I am a bit of a ponce. Considering that, any help with a boys name? We have Charles Lawrence XXXXXXX, our surname is pretty plain.

Have our girls name but struggling for a boy, so far we like,

Rupert
Hugo
Montgomery
Wilbur
Wilfred

We can't have names beginning with B as our surname begins with a J and Thomas, William and Henry are all out.

Any suggestions appreciated!

Iago doesn't have particularly pleasant connotations - he was the sociopath in Othello!

clumsymum · 16/09/2009 12:08

You have some SUPER namers here, I very much like Hugo, and think Hugo Montgomery go well together.

This thread does remind me of something I read some years ago tho', a mythical exchange between parents...

Her ...." Shall we go out this weekend? I fancy going to the Opera"

Him .... "Oh, that's a good idea, what about Tristan & Isolde? "

Her .... " oh, we'll ask my Mother to babysit them as usual"

He he, I think I horrify some of my friends with my baby name choices!!

Discussing names with a friend this week - She is Mum to Logan and Brooke, she proclaimed that she could never suggest names for me as I only like boring snobby names!!

I'm not really offended - I am now wild about her name choices and I know it is so so personal.

Glad to see so many usggestions though, makes me realise I am not alone in liking boring snobby names!!

I've just skimmed thru again.

No one has suggested Peregrine, which I put forward for our DS (but DH vetoed it)

I also was absolutely set on Xavier as his middle name, but mother talked me out of it on the morning of the birth. I regret not sticking to my guns on that one.

PanicMode · 16/09/2009 14:05

I'm loving this thread as I have similar name taste - but DH has reined me in on some of my wilder ones. It's giving me inspiration for this next one - we've used all our good names with the other three though so it's a struggle.

I love Monty and really wanted Hugo last time round, but we have a double barrelled surname beginning with H, so Hugo Hxxx-Xxxx seemed a bit much with the double H sound.

I also love Rupert, but we already have a Rufus so couldn't use that I don't think.

Current name choices which I know DH would veto again would be Casper, Jonty, Jolyon, Bartholemew (Barty) or Barnaby (Barny), Sebastian, Giles, Miles, Hector, Rory, Angus or my current top fave - Magnus.

Girls are SO much harder and I'm really struggling. I went back to my old (Catholic) boarding school ror a reunion this weekend and was having a surreptitious look at the noticeboards for inspiration, but there are so many foreigners there now, with mostly Spanish names so there seemed to be an awful lot of Marias, Isabellas and Sofias......

cyteen · 16/09/2009 14:30

Peregrine is cool. How about Melchior?

overthemoon2009 · 16/09/2009 15:04

I love the name Nathaniel (Nate for short) but it won't work for me, unfortunately.

I also love Lawrence, but as it's in the family already we can't go for that one either.

Love all your names except Hugo!

LaundryLyne · 11/08/2010 10:12

Old thread from 11 months ago

DessieLou · 11/08/2010 18:01

I love Rupert! My OH thinks Lysander is too poncey so may be good for you!

wilbur · 11/08/2010 18:07

APoisonTree - thanks Grin

Love all the names you mention - Wilfred best of the lot. I would say though, being married to a Rupert, there is still a lot of tedious prejudice about SUCH a traditionally posh name (assume it comes from the army thing). Dh is often ribbed about it, and people expect him to be a chinless yaya before they meet him. It's not the end of the world, but it can grate at times, being told someone thought you'd be a posh thicko. Oh, and after a lifetime of it, if you call him Rupert The Bear, he will deck you.

belgo · 11/08/2010 18:10

Rudyard. Rudy for short.

wisteria12 · 11/08/2010 18:49

I like Rudyard.

If it helps, my two sons are Atticus and Algernon; poncetastic, I know, but I love their names. Their middle names include Arthur, Leopold, Alban and Somerset for all your poncey needs. DS3 will be Cuthbert which is the best name ever.

AT1137 · 12/08/2010 09:35

Monty is lovely, that has just been added to my boy's shortlist of names! Lovely name!

Cortina · 12/08/2010 10:23

Willoughby
Dorian
Roscoe (if not for the Dukes of Hazard this could be quite cool, perhaps the references/memories have faded)?

LittleCheesyPineappleOne · 13/08/2010 10:08

Guy
Piers

Cortina · 13/08/2010 10:15

Cuthbert, brilliant!

Kathleen123 · 13/08/2010 10:28

Montgomery

bottyburpthebarbarian · 13/08/2010 10:33

Quintin

(yes I mean Quintin not Quentin)

and Tarquin

wisteria12 · 13/08/2010 12:34

Cortina - Grin

botty - I always thought saying "Quintin" makes you sound like you have a speech impediment.

bottyburpthebarbarian · 13/08/2010 13:06

wisteria - its an actual name though - I like it

ellesabe · 22/08/2010 14:54

My husband suggested Cuthbert as a joke and then felt bad when I said I liked it!

Vine · 22/08/2010 17:27

Pounce - Ignatius & Gideon.

A1980 · 22/08/2010 17:34

I didn't have time to read the entire thread, so apologies if it's already beeen listed and huge apologies to anyone who may have given their baby this name (but I'm not saying I don't like it!).

The most pretentious name for a boy I have ever come across is Diggory. It's pretty unique too as I've only ever come across one man named Diggory in my entire life. He suited it though, public boarding school boy.

Other than that, Conrad is a lovely name too and not very common.
