Looking for an English middle name for our daughter

Hello! I'm half-French, half-English (living in France) and my husband is Berber, so our daughter is going to have three names (French - Berber - English).
The French name will be Olivia (it is rare in France), the Berber name Lehna (meaning "peace"), but we can't settle on an English name.
It must :

  • be immediately identifiable as English
  • not start with an E or P (the initials would sound silly in French)
  • not start with the sound [a]

ex :
Olivia Lehna Cecily (but husband doesn't like it)
Olivia Lehna Juliet

any other ideas please? I'm due in 6 weeks!

Olivia Lehna Rose?

nowwearefour · 04/09/2009 15:28

I was going to suggest Rose too! I think a one syllable name would work well

amelie2781 · 04/09/2009 15:28

I quite like Rose but it is spelt the same way in French, so people won't see it is English...

Juliet is beautiful. What about Phoebe? Is that seen as French?

belgo · 04/09/2009 16:06

Olivia is very very popular in England, it's on the number one spot.

Now I think about it, it's hard to find a name that's really English.

bellissima · 04/09/2009 17:45

Fiona sounds very English.

Catherine, Constance, Elizabeth, Claire, Caroline, Helen(e) all French.

bellissima · 04/09/2009 17:46

Or Kate - Catherine is French but Kate is very English.

amelie2781 · 04/09/2009 18:29

Thank you for your help!
I'm adding May, Kate and Jane to my list.

To Shakirashakira : the Berbers are the "native" inhabitants of North Africa (before it was colonised by the Arabs). Their language has nothing to do with Arabic.

Mary, Ruth, Jane, Martha (although a th would be tricky for French ppl to pronounce maybe)

BlueChampagne · 07/09/2009 13:12

Godiva has a long English pedigree ...

Bellissima, Fiona is Scottish. Now, if the OP had asked for Scottish, Irish, Welsh or Cornish suggestions, I'm sure there would have been more suggestions.

Okay I stand corrected! - although the Fionas I have come across have been deeply English.

But I have certainly come across French Annes, Katherines (okay mainly Catherines but what's a letter), Edith (aye-dit), Judith (You-dit - mainly French Jewish name), Agathes (okay not quite Agatha but.... its a paste jewellery shop).

A friend Julie moved to Paris some time ago thinking her name very English, only to find it becoming more common for little French babies.

Apparently Zidane Zidaine or however you spell (DH would despair of me) a Berber, indeed most Algerians and Moroccans originally of Berber descent although only a few still speak the Berber language.

Still stand by Kate.
