Merrily is an adverb. Not a name!

WineOhWhy · 11/01/2012 23:05

I think you need to go with Meredith or Verity. Or possibly Mercy (I know a lovely 40(ish) yo Mercy).

There is a "journalist" with a DD called Merrily (cant recall her name) and I am sure she wrote an article (quite possibly in the DM) about how much her DD (now a teen) hates her name.

exoticfruits · 11/01/2012 23:07

No

exoticfruits · 11/01/2012 23:07

How about Joy?

WineOhWhy · 11/01/2012 23:11

ok i have googled. Journalist is called Rahell Halliwell. Article was in the guardian (possibly also DM). You should have a read. She plans to change her name by deed poll at 18. Never done a link before sorry (although I guess I should learn).

Also, Lembit Opek's current gf is called Merily. Enough to put anyone off I should think!

WineOhWhy · 11/01/2012 23:12

Rachel Halliwell that should be

BaronessBomburst · 11/01/2012 23:14

Only if she is a hobbit.

No, for the love of god, NO!!

MistressFrankly · 11/01/2012 23:19

Sounds like a pony or as baroness says, a hobbit.

Went to school with a Merri who was a miserable wee lump Grin

4madboys · 11/01/2012 23:22

um no, sorry i like unusual names but not that!

my dd is merryn, which is cornish and some people shorten to merry, we dont really shorten it yet, but she is only 13mths, we also liked meredith :)

NotnOtter · 11/01/2012 23:52

yes love it
know a boy Merrick who goes by Merry - LOVE IT!!

SlinkingOutsideInSocks · 12/01/2012 01:06

Here's the Rachel Halliwell article.

I would hate to be called this. Every SINGLE time you were less than chipper, you'd have some fucker popping his head over the office partition to ask why you weren't more merrily, and every one of those bastards thinking they were the first one to offer up such a hilarious and original gem of 'humour'. Hmm

That would wear thin remarkably quickly.

SlinkingOutsideInSocks · 12/01/2012 01:07

Merryn, though, is a beautiful name.

PercyFilth · 12/01/2012 01:37

Or there's Meriel.

Yes, I do realise this is a zombie thread, but if people are still interested ....

nooka · 12/01/2012 02:03

That poor kid. Not only having to bear with such a difficult name (and why didn't her parents move to her middle name when she first made it clear how much she hated it at four?) but also being talked about in a national newspaper. Like that will make her life any easier Hmm

I can understand Merry as a virtue name (although I don't like virtue names very much) but Merrily is an adverb, not even a noun. I think it would cause no end of problems.

sashh · 12/01/2012 05:46

Google "Merrily Watkins" - a series of novels about a female vicar who is also an exorcist.

I love the name and I am a fan of the books.

CheerfulYank · 12/01/2012 06:10

I think it's pretty. But I like the idea of what someone mentioned earlier (Meredith Lydia) called Merrily.

Though that does put me in mind of the oh-so-creepy Merricat from We Have Always Lived in the Castle.

nicknamenotinuse · 12/01/2012 06:14

no

TopazMortmain · 12/01/2012 06:27

...on high, the bells in heaven are ringing.

Thumbwitch · 12/01/2012 06:35

Old thread alert! I would imagine the OP has had the baby and named it whatever by now! Grin

Still wouldn't do it now, 2 years later...

PercyFilth · 12/01/2012 09:53

Isn't there some TV chef called Merrilees, which is even worse.

mathanxiety · 12/01/2012 16:49

Crocodilesmiles, everything is nicer than Ethel.

crocodilesmiles · 12/01/2012 16:53

Fair point mathanxiety....I have gone off it since posting anyway!!! Definitely won't be using it so don't worry about it everybody!

Littlecherublegs · 12/01/2012 17:11

Meredith, Merryn, Mary, even Merry (I know one!) - yes (or at least maybe) but Merrily NO!

Earthymama · 12/01/2012 17:15

I like it, because Merrily Watkins is one of the main characters in my latest book addiction, a crime series by Phil Rickman.

I also like Merry and Mariel.

DottieRose · 12/01/2012 17:18

I think Merrily sound beautiful, however there is the merrily down the stream thing.

Though the words being names thing is starting to catch on

Truely is a similar name that I love!
