I love this name for a little boy. I think it sounds sweet, has a great history and is unusual. DH thinks it sounds pretentious.

Opinions?

obv lit not church lol.

s'ok.

i liked hebe for a girl, so sort of similar ring.

Greensleeves · 14/07/2009 11:30

the venerable bede

anglo-saxon monk?

haven't heard it floated as a Christian name before, but it's quite nice!

Lilymaid · 14/07/2009 11:31

Fine as long as you are prepared to call a DD Hilda

Fimbo · 14/07/2009 11:32

When I used to go to church, the beadle was called Bede.

throckenholt · 14/07/2009 11:33

it matches your posting name at least.

seeker · 14/07/2009 11:35

Pretentious. Extremely. Lie down until you feel better - and under no circumstances go anywhere NEAR the Anglo Saxon Chronicles until your child is registered.

omaoma · 14/07/2009 11:37

i think it's beautiful! you can't please everybody. there are some right dodgy monikers in my baby yoga class but their mums light up when they say them, so they clearly like them!
at least it's not obama...

GooseyLoosey · 14/07/2009 11:42

Venerable Bede.

TheVenerable · 14/07/2009 11:43

Why is it pretentious?

I think pretentious names are those used by the upper classes only. As far as I know Bede is very rarely used by anyone.

He was an inspirational Saint and its an old English name - I would really like to understand why its perceived as pretentious?

Tommy · 14/07/2009 11:43

lovely - but a bit too unusual IMO (and I have heard of St Bede!)

LouMacca · 14/07/2009 11:44

No. Sorry, don't like it at all.

seeker · 14/07/2009 11:46

Oh Lord - I'm going to be offensive, sorry! I think it's pretentious in a intellectual-snobbery-kind of way. What my brother calls "Don's Disease". Sorry.

Mamazon · 14/07/2009 11:49

well im a little thick and when i read it it pronounced it as in Be day.

don't know why, but surely i wont be the only one.

Are you going to call your daughter Radegunde?

I agree with your dh I'm afraid.

TheVenerable · 14/07/2009 12:01

We already have a DD called Mathilda. I liked that because it is an old English name.

Greensleeves · 14/07/2009 12:02

It's really growing on me actually. I think it's sweet for a little boy, and quite cool for a bloke

Thunderduck · 14/07/2009 12:05

It's awful.

suwoo · 14/07/2009 12:06

I actually like it. I would even go so far as to say, I really like it.

I don't know why I am so keen, I do have a tendency to like the more poncey names though.

TheChilliMooseIsRubbish · 14/07/2009 12:19

Isn't there a part of Leicester called Bede Island?

TheChilliMooseIsRubbish · 14/07/2009 12:35

here it is I don't think it is the nicest of areas - my brother lives on one of the roads mentioned. Not worth naming a child after.
