I love this name for a little boy. I think it sounds sweet, has a great history and is unusual. DH thinks it sounds pretentious.

Opinions?

A brother for Caedmon, perchance?

Just makes everyone think of the Venerable Bede. It's not bad as a name - tad pretentious .

The Venerable - Pretentious names are not used by the upper classes (horrid phrase IMO) only. Pretentiousness is usually more about the parents wanting to draw attention to themselves, of whatever "class", and their amazing cleverness. Sort of "look at me, we named little Bede after the subject of DH's doctoral thesis on 7th century ecclesiatics"

Made me think of a council estate in Leicester...

Fabulous. Go for it. The Venerable Bede was also known as The Venomous Bede, though, as he could be rather scathing about his contemporaries!

fatzak · 14/07/2009 13:40

I think it's a great name but it now reminds me of the 8 child family who set up their tent next to us during our half term break!! They were certainly not pretentious and had such strong Scouse accents it took us a day to work out that the boy was called Bede and not Bird!! Still not sure what the girl whose name sounded like Pizza was actually called

Look, if you like it, change your own name to Bede by deed (or beed?) poll. You can't protect child from everything life has to throw at him, but you can avoid actively doing something that might make their life more difficult for him.

yama · 14/07/2009 13:55

Makes me think of Buck Rogers (in the 25th Century).

Didn't Twiki say "Bede-Bede-Bede"?

liliputlady · 14/07/2009 14:09

I think it's not bad - a short simple name. I reckon it could become popular. It would make a good middle name too.

sophiesmummie · 14/07/2009 14:20

I like Bede - simple, classic and good for a boy and man alike.

Momdeguerre · 14/07/2009 15:32

As long as you don't mind people calling him bee-day. . .

Not keen. Great heratige, terrible name.

piscesmoon · 14/07/2009 15:42

I hope that he is a strong enough character to deal with it in the playground.

KristinaM · 14/07/2009 18:06

no please dont do it

choose another unusual name with a great history

Scorpette · 14/07/2009 18:07

Sorry, but I know someone with the surname Bede and he just gets called Bede The Paed (as in Paedo) all the time. Think kids would think up this one too...

piscesmoon · 15/07/2009 07:16

I think that before a parent lands a DC with an unusual name they ought to ask the opinion of quite a few 10 yr olds! Bede lends itself to lots of variations, many of which they won't have thought of.

MoChan · 15/07/2009 07:23

I like Bede. It's funny how names get considered 'pretentious', in this case just because of the Venerable associations. It's a nice, simple name, and I'd consider it for a boy, but I don't think it would go with our (well, OH's) surname.

BlueChampagne · 15/07/2009 16:10

I think Ninian would be worse.
