Rowan as a girl's name?

In light of a recent thread about boys' names I am now feeling a little concerned that Rowan is seen as a boys name only. I am expecting DC3 who will be DD1 and have Rowan on my list of possible names.
I am nearly 38 weeks though so may be a little over sensitive ! The other name on the list is Darcy/Darcey (not sure to have the 'e' or not!).
Is Rowan a no for a girl?

I know 3 boys called Rowan and 2 girls.

SuperDuperJezebel · 11/07/2009 15:55

Its my name and i always have conversations which go
"okay, can i take your name please?"
"Rowan"
"great, and your first name?"

im not sold on it personally, but i do get compliments on it fairly regularly.

janeite · 11/07/2009 16:06

DD2 would have been Rowan, had she been a boy. It had never occurred to me that it could be a girl's name too.

SpeckledHen · 11/07/2009 16:06

I think it is beautiful. I know a little girl called it. Lovely!

madwomanintheattic · 11/07/2009 16:07

my god daughter is called rowan. i think it's lovely.

Thunderduck · 11/07/2009 16:09

I don't like it as a girl's name.

SuperDuperJezebel · 11/07/2009 16:11

i also get "ah yes, Rowan, like Mr Bean?!"

DONT DO IT!

Greensleeves · 11/07/2009 16:12

I know a beautiful little girl Rowan

it really suits her

SOLOisMeredithGrey · 11/07/2009 16:13

I love it for a girl more than for a boy.

Greensleeves · 11/07/2009 16:13

I think Rowena is quite pretty too

but prefer Rowan

jellybeans · 11/07/2009 16:54

I LOVE this name for girls! I know 3 of them and it's lovely. I knew a boy Rowan at school but do see it as more of a girls name.

FlappyTheBat · 11/07/2009 17:01

Was on my list of girls names for dd2 but dh vetoed it, I loved it and still do.

TheOddOne · 11/07/2009 17:03

If DS1 had been a girl he would have been Rowan or Rowanne. Bet you can't guess what his name is .

Wilts · 11/07/2009 17:04

I love Rowan, but only for a girl. If we ever have a girl she will be named Rowan

becklespeckle · 11/07/2009 17:06

I love it

Ondine · 11/07/2009 17:06

Generally I think unisex names work a lot better for boys rather than girls i.e. Ashley, Hayden, Robin etc I like for boys but seem harsh for girls.

But Rowan is the exception I think, it's pretty.

EachPeachPearMum · 11/07/2009 17:09

I know 1 Rowan... and she is a girl, though she isn't a child. I like it.

dizzydixies · 11/07/2009 17:12

I love it for a girl and would have considered it for DD3 had our friend not already used it

its lovely and I'm not of the camp that doesn't like boys names for girls etc, our DD3 has a name traditionally used for a boy and she is an absolute doll and has made it her own

if you love it use it or you'll regret it

2HotCrossBunsAnd1InTheOven · 11/07/2009 17:59

Thank you all for your comments - more yeses than nos, hooray . I don't know any little ones of either sex called Rowan but know of 2 grown up girls and 1 grown up boy. I always thought I would call a DD Darcy but finally getting my chance after 2 boys I think I might just prefer Rowan...

paisleyleaf · 11/07/2009 18:08

It can be both. But I prefer it for a boy
and I'm not too keen on Rowena

MIAonline · 11/07/2009 18:08

I love it as a girls name, not too wacky, yet not too dullsville.

ShowOfHands · 11/07/2009 18:16

I love it as a girl's name. So much nicer than Darcy too.

blametheparents · 11/07/2009 18:18

DS's class is called Rowan. All of the classes at his school are named after trees.
