similar first name to surname...

One of the boy's names we both love is William (would use Will or Bill) but our surname is Williams! Having trouble finding another boy's name we love. Welsh for preference. Would this be cruel? Am thinking it didn't seem to harm David Davies or Edward Wooodward..

its freaky, he would be teased

GreatGooglyMoogly · 17/06/2009 16:20

There was a boy at school with me called Donald Donaldson and we all took the mickey I'm afraid.

Fimbo · 17/06/2009 16:21

No! Don't do it!

ScummyMummy · 17/06/2009 16:22

You are joking, no?

chipmonkey · 17/06/2009 16:25

I met a Martin Martin and was lectured in college by a Brian O'Brien.
Please don't do it!

Fimbo · 17/06/2009 16:32

We used to have a client at work - Mrs Joyce only probably was her first name was also Joyce.

I think in those circumstances I would have kept my maiden name.

madwomanintheattic · 17/06/2009 16:36

he'll just get called 'will squared' or something similar.
tis a bit weird for me, but quite a lot of people seem to do it...
my faves are of the chris cross variety though

shadowofacow · 17/06/2009 16:44

we had a nicholas nicholson in my class at school.

he also got teased a lot!!

purpleduck · 17/06/2009 16:46

yea - don't do it. Seems slightly unimaginative...seriously, out of thousands of names in the world, the ONLY one you like is the one you already have...?

IneedacleanerIamalazyslattern · 17/06/2009 18:25

shadowofacow spooky I was going to say I knew a Nicholas Nicholoson too wonder if it was the same one.

elvislives · 17/06/2009 18:32

Bill Williams is a very common name IME. Of all the hundreds of names out there I'm sure there would be something a little more personal.

Tambajam · 17/06/2009 18:33

You cannot call a child William Williams. Surely, you can't. Wouldn't there be a crack in the space-time continuum or something. You could be risking the universe.

bumptwitknocker · 17/06/2009 18:59

I knew a Richard Richardson. It's like handing the insult to the bully.

weegiemum · 17/06/2009 19:01

I've taught - Donald Macdonald, Murdo McMurdo, and, fabulously. Auley Macauley! (in North of Scotland)

No, don't do it.

belgo · 17/06/2009 19:02

You just can't. David Davies and Edward Woodward aren't the same as William Williams.

I'm sure I heard of the name Gwillim? Is that welsh?

shadowofacow · 17/06/2009 19:02

did you go to school is scotland?

or are there two poor nicholas nicholsons wandering about

IneedacleanerIamalazyslattern · 17/06/2009 20:36

shadowofacow erm I certainly did I wasn't at the same school as him I used to get the train home after school think he got one too although not sure but he was there most days, t'was in Aberdeen.

clumsymum · 17/06/2009 20:45

I am related to a John Johnson, and thought that was a pretty unimaginative choice.

NO NO no, William Williams is just ...... daft.

Go to the library, or to Amazon, get one of those books of baby names, and work thru it.

FGS there are 1000's of names in the world, there must be something you like.

When we had ds, our problem was cutting down the shortlist. As it is we had to give him 3 christian names.

janeite · 17/06/2009 20:50

V silly.

clumsymum · 17/06/2009 20:51

You can start tonight, with this list. There are several hundred here alone, many of which I couldn't even start to pronounce, I admit.

Even Vaughn is on that list. Now, Vaughn Williams, that has a nice musical sound to it

Tidey · 17/06/2009 20:54

I've heard of a child called Tyler Tyler. William Williams isn't quite that bad, but I would really seriously think hard about this and see if you can find some other names you love.

shadowofacow · 17/06/2009 20:56

aww no its not the same one.

i went to school in edinburgh.

IneedacleanerIamalazyslattern · 18/06/2009 09:34

Bizarrly enough I do know he moved to Edinburgh but I suppose it depends on how young you were when you knew him.

PenelopePitstops · 18/06/2009 09:36

dont do it, i knew a david davis!

WHY do people do this!!?

thirtysomething · 18/06/2009 09:42

no you can't it would be ridiculous. We loved James but just couldn't name DS that as it was so similar to our surname. Am so glad we didn't as he has really grown into the name we went for and has been teased/bullied at school enough - this would have just increased the opportunities for his self-esteem to take a nose-dive. It's just a name at the end of the day - find another one you like!!
