similar first name to surname...

One of the boy's names we both love is William (would use Will or Bill) but our surname is Williams! Having trouble finding another boy's name we love. Welsh for preference. Would this be cruel? Am thinking it didn't seem to harm David Davies or Edward Wooodward..

We love William too - but thought it too similar to our surname (and it's less similar than Williams!).

HolidaysQueen · 18/06/2009 10:11

None of these are as bad as Neville Neville, father of footballers Phil and Gary Neville.

Bill Williams is sort of okay, William Williams is terrible. But there are definitely many more lovely names out there!

Lancelottie · 18/06/2009 10:31

I lived next door to a Bill Williams. It was just his name. Now Matthew Matthews, two doors further away, got mercilessly teased...

TsarChasm · 18/06/2009 10:38

Weegiemum - blimey you've come across this quite often. They weren't all in the same class were they?

PuppyMonkey · 18/06/2009 10:40

Billy Williams sounds nice.

belgo · 18/06/2009 10:48

Just come across Wilfred. That would be ok Wilfred Williams.

bruffin · 18/06/2009 11:50

My godfather's son is Nicholas Nicholas but that is something to do with cypriot tradition

screamingabdab · 18/06/2009 11:51

Don't do it !

What about Evan

or

Haydn

clairebear88 · 18/06/2009 14:51

Hi

If I had a DS I would use William as a middle name for family reasons and I love the name Samuel. I think these 2 names flow well

Samuel Williams ??

Egg · 18/06/2009 14:54

I knew a Michael Michaels at school and we all thought it was a bit and a bit silly of his parents.

Also knew a Terry McSherry when I was a teenager .

Thunderduck · 18/06/2009 14:54

Don't do it.It'd be ridiculous.

pranma · 18/06/2009 18:16

too many Willies imho

eeky · 18/06/2009 23:13

ok, I give in, that's told me! think it must be the pg hormones - not sure what dh excuse is. Will think of sensible welsh name instead

screamingabdab · 19/06/2009 08:36

What about Evan or Haydn (as mentioned above) ?

Or even Aneurin ?

BikeRunSki · 19/06/2009 08:39

A bit silly.

I went to school with a Ronnie Rennie, which was a constant source of mirth. I also knew an Alison Alinson.

Why not have Liam as a derivitave of William, or Gwilam if you want Welsh names?

BikeRunSki · 19/06/2009 08:40

Samuel is good too, but I am biased .

LuLuBai · 19/06/2009 09:03

I've met three John Johnsons - every time I've thought how silly. I love Auley Macauley - too Hairy Maclairey for words.

I have to agree with everyone that William Williams is pretty daft.

But for other Welsh names - love Evan (was just thinking what a nice name it was while listening to the Today programme this morning actually). Also love Elwyn (unfortuntately my husband doesn't!).

clumsymum · 19/06/2009 11:57

Blimey, Gwilam Williams is really difficult to say. Imagine him, 19 years old, out with the rugby club, had a few (or a lot of) lagers, and someone asks him his name

FrizzBath · 19/06/2009 12:10

I know a Will Williams, and I actually think it's a great name (although bizarrely, he changed his first name from Neil...)

mumzy · 19/06/2009 18:37

Billy Williams would be the most sensible choice IMO

lowrib · 20/06/2009 01:41

A few hundred years ago Wales would have been full of William Willaims (or was it William ap William?) as the naming convention used to be that you used your father's first name as your surname, so double names like this were very normal.

lechatnoir · 20/06/2009 15:33

I knew a Morgan Morgan who was teased mercilessly in school - seriously unimaginative & frankly a little IMO!

simplesusan · 20/06/2009 23:46

There was a guy on Tv today called Willie Williams and both myself and dh pissed ourselves laughing.
Do not call your child William under any circumstances. It will sound stupid and he will hate you for it and quite rightly so.

Ivykaty44 · 20/06/2009 23:48

Edward Wooodward.. was told he sounded like a fart underwater
