I love the name, but I'm getting mixed opinions!

There's a really lovely perfume called Kai.

bigted · 06/06/2009 22:16

barns, too true,
never understood the whole mumsnet names thing.
Who cares what other people think?

Bert2e · 06/06/2009 22:17

Chavtastic - sorry :-(

girlandboy · 06/06/2009 22:19

Really really dislike it.

Sorry

beanieb · 06/06/2009 22:26

Also makes me immediately think of DAniella Westbrook.

onthepier · 06/06/2009 22:44

Hmm, will reconsider. I know you're not supposed to base your decisions around what others think, but will for my future child's sake, I don't want him to have to put up with comments about his name for his whole life!!

Thanks for all your responses btw!

onepier... he won't have to put up with comments, honestly. It's not like it's not a proper name, just not that common. It will be his name and he will be proud, regardless of if others like it or not.

My son is in a school of 300 + and is the only boy with his name. He loves that, in his words " noone has to use my 2nd name to know who i am"

ScummyMummy · 06/06/2009 22:52

There was a beautiful kid with dark red hair at my primary school called Kai. But there are 2 primary-aged Kais since who have both seemed really troubled and angry. it has tainted the name for me a bit.

barnsleybelle · 06/06/2009 23:02

BTW... my ds is not a Kai...

MrsMcCluskey · 06/06/2009 23:03

not keen on it
bit footballery

jellybeans · 06/06/2009 23:04

It's OK.

Overmydeadbody · 07/06/2009 00:18

I've taught a few kais in my time. Lovely children, shame about the parents

differentID · 07/06/2009 00:18

OMDB- what a fantastic way to put it!

Pingpong · 07/06/2009 00:24

It sounds like half a name to me like it should be Kyle or Kylie. I realise it's a name in it's own right but it just doesn't have much impact. Sorry.

lowrib · 07/06/2009 00:54

I really liked Kai when I was first pregnant but it didn;t make the shortlist after I realised how popular it is becoming (I wanted a more unusual name for our LO).

You can also have Cai, which is Welsh, and a shortened version of Caius (or maybe Gaius?)

Stannie · 07/06/2009 08:52

Not my cup of tea but it's not my baby! If you like it - use it!

A friend in the USA recently had her first baby and he is called Mordecai .. shortened to Cai..

Not sure what I think of Mordecai...

OMG my DS (4yrs) called Kai, back when there weren't any.....now this. WTF have we done. Heck. We live in a poshish part of Devon. maybe if he never moves he'll survive. What was I thinking. Bum. Bum bum bum.

ragged · 29/07/2011 15:53

Onthepier
someone will loathe whatever name you choose, and probably pointedly tell you as much, I guarantee that! What matters if that you like it and you know you always will.

Kai doesn't do anything for me (but I've nothing against it either).
Very popular around 8 yrs ago, I think. Haven't met so many under 5.

MelinaM · 29/07/2011 15:56

No one has mentioned the 'Rooney factor' Grin

grubbalo · 29/07/2011 17:59

Just what I was thinking Melina

It's actually a perfectly nice name, just ruined for me by Daniella Westbrook and Wayne Rooney. But then again I don't know any in real life so that's the only association I have with it as a name!

If you like it, go for it - as other people have said, it's what you think of it that counts.

otchayaniye · 29/07/2011 18:02

I'm reminded of lice haircuts and tracksuits ... in and of itself it's not an unpleasant sounding name, but I'd prefer one that has a harder ending or is two syllables.

ThePosieParker · 29/07/2011 18:02

Harsh, very harsh and you have to have a pretty non discript accent.

anonymousbird · 29/07/2011 18:16

Awful
Chav
Trying too hard.
Can't take anyone with a name like that seriously! They have to live with it forever remember.

QueenofDreams · 29/07/2011 18:20

sorry don't like it. It is VERY popular where I live (an area notorious for chavdom, in fact the town where the term chav originated is right near here)
