If you like granny names for girls, what would you pick for a boy..?

Think we are down to a shortlist of two boys names (as mentioned in previous thread). These are Felix and Oscar. I love the name Felix but am worried it is too out there and also the cat connection is in the back of my mind...dont want ds's name to attract negative attention. Also grandparents hate it! Should I go for it anyway seeing as how dh and I love it? Is the cat connection that bad? Oscar I also love but feel it is the safer choice.

Do you have any other boy name suggestions we maybe haven't thought of? (dd has a granny type name so that gives indication of taste). Gentle honesty please!!

Helen1374, you are a woman of quite remarkable taste. Can't think of better names for two boys myself.

cyteen · 23/05/2009 22:08

Edmund or Vincent. Can't comment re. Felix as I really love it, much more than Oscar in fact.

hobbgoblin · 23/05/2009 22:10

I loved all the granny names on that thread.

I have a Felix, and between first and middle names of my DC we have Maxim, Henry and Stanley covered so I must really love Grandad names too!

I like Bertie, Archie, Angus and Alfie

Bit of a coincidence. , although I have different middle names.

magbags · 24/05/2009 20:35

Hobogoblin, Oh cool, you have a Felix!! Can I ask whether you ever had any negative reactions / cat comments when introducing Felix to people? Or was this never an issue given it is just such a cool name!

What is your take on the cat connection, was this something you considered before choosing?

oliviasmama · 24/05/2009 21:46

Hector and Walter, my faves

hobbgoblin · 24/05/2009 21:49

Some people have mentioned the cat connection but not in a negative way, just the occasional acknowledgement iyswim? I was aware but didn't give much heed to the cat food 'issue' personally.

My Felix is actually quite proud of being like the rather cool and quirky Felix ad cat, which is saying something for an often contrary 7 year old!

We actually named Felix Rory for several days after his birth but then changed minds and am so glad we did.

Sounds good with a French accent too, by the way!

walter
wilf

magbags · 24/05/2009 22:47

In our attempts at a french accent Felix does sound really good!

I think your laid back approach is the best way forward, hobbgoblin. ie recognise the cat connection but don't take it too seriously. I'm sure I am over analysing the whole thing now anyway...mostly due to previous negative comments from grandparents.

Liking some of the other suggestions too, Hugo is lovely.

Oh Ernie - lovely!! Arnold/Arnie, and I also like Kenneth too

JRocks · 25/05/2009 13:04

Friends of ours have a newborn Vincent, it's not a name I would have thought of, but is actually quite lovely. I don't think there's anything wrong with Felix or Oscar, but my gran's cat is Felix and my friend's dog is Oscar so there would be many connotations here! You should go with what you want, and don't bother announcing it until the baby arrives by which time most people are too busy falling in love with them to notice.

helen1374 · 25/05/2009 16:34

diamondhead, you're not attached to Louis Theroux are you? I recently found out that he has an Albert and a Fred, I was most excited!!

What are your middle names?

belgo · 25/05/2009 16:38

Gustave
Ludo
Otto
Edgar

dizzydixies · 25/05/2009 17:37

I love sidney

RedCharityBonney · 25/05/2009 17:42

Felix is wonderful. I love it. I was forbidden to use it on as according to DH it's "a wanker name"
He's a miserable git though and if i wasn't saddled with him I'd use it like a shot.

Oscar doesn't float my boat especially, but is a very pleasant name.

schroedingersdodo · 20/03/2010 11:18

I love Felix, DH doesn't. But anyway, it doesn't go with the surname (that has an X too and both names together sound like a tongue twister), so I can't go for it
