OK - so change your OWN name to the name you love!

If you give your child a name that may cause him problems then you are making a decision on behalf of someone else. I really don't think that's fair!

seeker · 19/05/2009 10:24

sorry, I missed out a bit. Should read "making a decision on a point of principle on behalf of someone else and I don't think that's fair"

beanieb · 19/05/2009 10:30

but what about names like mohammad or Nigel or Jade? Anyone if they were mean enough could think of a reason to bully a child over those names. I don't have to change my OWN name to one I love because I like it enough already. If I name my child the name I am planning I am sure that there will be some people who think it's 'wrong' but it's a real name and there are plenty of people with that name, just that it's a bit unusual.

I really do think it's far more important to worry about instiling your own children with a sense of pride and self esteem rather than worrying about how other parent's children will react to your child's name.

seeker · 19/05/2009 10:39

If you're Muslim then Mohammed is a perfectly ordinary name. It's so associated with Islam that I would be very surprised if any non-Muslim families use it, in the same way it would be surprising to find a Muslim child called Christian.

You would have to be seriously bonkers to call a baby Jade for the next couple of years. Surely everyone would agree with that!

Nigel is OK, I suppose - but certainly it has connotations of "posh" and "wet" - so I would think most people would think twice.

Of course we should work on our children's self esteem. My dd has learned to love her red hair and glasses, but if she had had perfect vision, I wouldn't have made her wear glasses with plain glass in them as an educational tool!

FrankMustard · 19/05/2009 11:34

Actually, you might find a lot of people naming their baby Jade in the wake of Jade Goody's high profile - look at what happened after Princess Diana died - a whole glut of Diana's were born!

seeker · 19/05/2009 13:14

Give me strength!

beanieb · 19/05/2009 13:19

what about all the people who called their child Jade before Jade Goody died, or those people who called their children jade because they like the name?

Are they being cruel?

I like the name Joseph... woops can't do that - what about Stalin, not to mention Mr Fritzl!
I like the name Eva - oh whoops, Eva Braun, can't go there.

seeker · 19/05/2009 13:40

Jade isn't to my taste, but before the Jade Goody thing it was a perfectly acceptable choice. And in 2 years time it will be again. It would be a bit odd to name a child that at the moment, don't you think?

Nobody is going to be teased specifically because they are called Joseph or Eva. As I said, bullies will find something to bully people about. But it seems unkind to hand them a custard pie and say "Here, why not throw this in my child's face?"

beanieb · 19/05/2009 13:42

like red hair?

seeker · 19/05/2009 13:46

Well, I couldn't CHOOSE whether or not my child had red hair!

pinkmagic1 · 19/05/2009 13:51

Out of the 3, I prefer Jethro.

pinkmagic1 · 19/05/2009 13:55

Beanieb, why would a child be picked on for being called Mohamed?

Paolosgirl · 19/05/2009 13:58

Seth - like

Amos and Jethro sound like a couple of old Cornishmen sitting atop a stile, chewing on a corn stalk.

I agree with Seeker. Cold Comfort Farm and porridge bubbling restlessly in the snood.

branflake81 · 19/05/2009 15:05

None of them, I'm afraid. Althuogh if you held a gun to my head I'd probably go for Seth.

beanieb · 19/05/2009 15:28

"Beanieb, why would a child be picked on for being called Mohamed? " because some people pick on people because they are racist. I'm not saying it's right I am just saying it does happen.

LtEveDallas · 19/05/2009 15:40

Love Seth, but it is getting very popular. Jethro is my brothers nickname - so I think it's cool! Amos hmmm, not so much, but I reckon it could grow on me.(just like Seth did)

What about Saul?

seeker · 19/05/2009 21:10

I think I've lost your train of thought, beanieb.

It must have been because I saw something nasty in the woodshed.

MrsJamin · 19/05/2009 21:13

Love Seth, know 3 of them, all lovely. Amos not too bad, but Jethro - no.

GetOrfMoiLand · 19/05/2009 21:20

Lol at the Emmerdale references - that's what I thought.

Actually, I like Seth, but not Amos or Jethro, they do sound a bit, um, rural.

Wilkiepedia · 19/05/2009 21:36

Seth lovely. The other two not.

seeker · 19/05/2009 21:43

But, for the Love of God not Seth if you live anywhere in the Thames Estuary or Kent-ish sort of area, or he will suffer then same fate as ds's friends Efan and Fad. Honestly.

hester · 19/05/2009 21:44

I love Seth.
