Scottish boy name - Greer / Grier? Overdue and help required!

Am now overdue with DC3 (boy) and searching for a name that DH and I can agree on. I've always liked Greer but thought of it as a girls name (due to 1940's actress of that name).

DH has just mentioned his father has a (male) friend (also Scottish) named Greer (or possibly Grier). I like it but not 100% certain as I've never personally met anyone of that name (male or female).....what do you think? Will people automatically assume he is a she?

(by the way our other choices include Hector, Hugo, Hamish, Nairn, Campbell, Blair, William,- in fact we don't really even have a short list as such...............) Poor child could end up called ANYTHING!

Anyway, so Greer/Grier..............?
Thanks for your help

I've only known female Griers. It isn't a name I'm very fond of I must say.

Thunderduck · 19/05/2009 00:35

I love Hamish and Blair though.

frazzledoldbag · 19/05/2009 00:36

I think it might be a grower?

DH likes Hamish (what DD1 would have been).
I've always loved Blair but Tony Blair has tainted it for me sadly. Not sure if I can get over the association

I am scottish living in scottish land and I know no greers or griers as a first name only as a second name.

What about Harris, Lewis, Connar, Douglas, Stuart or Stewart, Lachlan, I think Hector, Hugo sound a bit well poncy or just silly sorry . Hamish is a bit too stereotypical maybe, people will expect him to be ginger and wear a kilt, (no offense meant as I love ginger men, especially in kilts .

frazzledoldbag · 19/05/2009 00:49

We live in Scotland, there is a pretty good chance of him being ginger and he'll definitely have a kilt when he's older. I think we've discussed and dismissed your others above skramble. TBH we've discussed and dismissed pretty much everything - hence the move towards more unusual names like Greer. My favorite otherwise would have to be Hugo but DH is unconvinced.
Oh why, why, why do boys names have to be so hard!??

what about Brodie?
or, one of my personal favourites and I love Hugo too so hope you'll like it

Hector

FreshScent · 19/05/2009 11:06

I've only ever heard of girls named Greer. I think it's a girls name. Brooke Shields also has a daughter called Grier.

thell · 19/05/2009 11:20

I've only ever met one Greer and she was a little girl - but I think it would work for a boy too, and sound quite manly

Your other choices are good too. And I like Brodie

If you both keep coming back to Greer, then maybe that's the one for you. I liked the other names on our shortlist for DD, but as I imagined calling her each one, I knew that if I never got chance to use my favourite one I'd kick myself forever!

lotspot · 19/05/2009 11:36

never met/heard of anyone called Greer/Grier, but before i opened the thread i assumed it was for a boy just reading the name if that haps lol

I like Hamish and Campbell from your list also

bella29 · 19/05/2009 11:37

Magnus

stripeypineapple · 19/05/2009 11:37

I knew a girl in primary school and her brother was called Grierson. Their mother was Scottish.

I don't know if its an official name or one their parents came up with.

tummytickler · 19/05/2009 12:03

I would expect a Greer/Grier to be a girl tbh.
From your list i love Hector (dh and i considered this a while back).

my dh is Scottish so we thought a lot about scottish boys names and we (he!) really liked Gregor. What about that - similar sound to Greer only (I thik=nk) much more handsome and masculine.
Also agree with pp about Magnus - that is fabby too!

frazzledoldbag · 19/05/2009 13:00

Greer as a boys name is derived from Gregor (according to google anyway).
Hector is on our list. I like Brodie but it is similar to our surname so DH says no. Otherwise I'd be pushing for that. Still loving Hugo too.

Think will wait and see what pops into our heads when he comes out (soon, please soon)......

Thanks for the feedback - it's so interesting to hear what your reactions to it are.

Murray is lovely

Pingpong · 19/05/2009 15:26

I prefer Gregor to Greer.
I never heard of anyone called Grier or Greer apart from Germaine Greer
I prefer Hugh to Hugo.
Hector makes me think of Monarch of the Glen (TV show)

walkingwomb · 19/05/2009 15:40

struan? love that

goomum · 20/05/2009 15:41

Keir is a much nicer similar sounding Scottish boy's name.
