Lola- too ''stripper'' to even consider?

Hey, so I really value all your opinions (wish I'd asked you about dd1's name I could have saved months of anguish!) dh really likes the name Lola- I think perhaps it's too 'chavette'?

Ignoring the dubious background of dolores (pains, sorrows, maria de los dolores, blabla) Lola seems a little common to me- (lola bunny lolo ferrari, pole dancing awful name with lolita connotations as well) but I still think it is cute- is it ready to be on 'the list' or completely veto-able?

Thanks

Lola is cute (Charlie and Lola) but what about Lois? I love this name but didnt' have chance to use it.

LauriefairycakeeatsCupid · 06/05/2009 17:34

I like it as a name but I do sing 'she was a showgirl' every time I see it on mumsnet.

tamaraotter · 06/05/2009 17:42

I think it's a bit babyish and childlike, and now popular.

browntrout · 06/05/2009 17:44

i quite like Lola. My DD's middle name is Lula which is similar and may or may not have stripper connotations!

Drusilla · 06/05/2009 17:46

As long as she doesn't walk like a woman but talk like a man

sockmonster · 06/05/2009 17:49

Thanks for comments, I am vetoing it as I type...

How about Tallulah, nickname Lula?

I haven't heard of any strippers called Lula-hmm.. can't get that barry manilow song out of my head now.. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhh!!!!

his name was rico... now there's an idea

Lovely - rolls off the tongue and it's a Spanish name that reminds me of 2 lovely beautiful girls from spain that I knew with the name.
I'm not sure a barry manilow song is a reason not to choose a name!
If it helps my area is about as far from 'chav' as possible and there are 2 in ds's school- so it is popular too, b ut then anything you think is original now will be in the top 50 in 2 yrs time.
I'm sure Sarah Cox thought she was being original with her Lola!

sockmonster · 06/05/2009 17:50

ah yes Drusilla, I forgot about that one! I have fully vetoed it now! Thank you!!

Oh no luckylady74! I have un-vetoed it! so confused- hormones-aah

actually, I now think it has become too common in a Charlie and Lola sort of way, rather than The Kinks or Barry mAnilow sorta way..

luckylady74 · 06/05/2009 18:00

Your dd will make any name you choose to give her her own. As soon as people know her they will think of her rather than any connotations they may have thought of.
All children will think of Charlie and Lola, but then that's a wonderful children's book series with highly articulate characters- so quite good really!

I considered lola for dd1. I like it.

sockmonster · 06/05/2009 18:11

Thanks for your comments- I do like it-I hate to confess-

Can anyone think of a longer name that could be used, to give an excuse for Lola as a nickname?

Other than Dolores....or Lourdes (madonna=?)...thanks!

Louisa? A lovely name too

Sparkletastic · 06/05/2009 18:16

It is fabulous (I might be biased ) - and for every showgirl / walks like a woman talks like a man I will raise you 'Whatever Lola wants, Lola gets' which is by far the best of the three. On the other hand, every time I watch Ashes to Ashes I do wish that I could have an Alexandra / Alex for imaginary DD3.

wotulookinat · 06/05/2009 18:29

Lola is cool. Charlie and Lola are good. Lola Rose is a good Jaqueline Wilson book. Old folk may well sing the song, but I wouldn't let it put me off.
PLEASE NOT Tallulah - that really is too showgirl!

MadameCastafiore · 06/05/2009 18:30

Tallulah and Lola are stripper names.

Comewhinewithme · 06/05/2009 20:05

My baby is due in 3 weeks and this is current favourite .

luckylady74 · 06/05/2009 20:09

Yes they are, but they're also the names of many posh girls and every other kind of girl!
Your cultural reference pool is very small if stripper is all you can come up with.

Hassled · 06/05/2009 20:09

Lola does walk like a woman but talk like a man - there's no other Lola. It is a shame, because it's a lovely name.

Hassled · 06/05/2009 20:11

Here you go

tummytickler · 06/05/2009 22:06

Really dislike Lola I am afraid.
I much prefer Louise/Louisa with the nn Lulu or Lula, which are similar but more classic and stylish and she has the option of a more grown up name when she is older

SmallerClanger · 06/05/2009 22:32

DD2 is Lola. I was unsure for a while & we took days after bher irth to finally decide. She sings "Lola was a showgirl" on way to school! now realise how popular it is as there is another Lola in her class. We all love 'Charlie & Lola' though & she gets personalised pyjamas!

nappyaddict · 06/05/2009 22:35

It's become very popular since Charlie and Lola appeared on our screens.

How about:

Viola
Iona
Ione
Iola
Iole
Claribel
Arabella
Anabella
