What do you think of Margaret?
I love Peggy as a nn, and also Maggie, but not sure aabout Margaret, I have never met oe under the age of 30!! (so due a revival possibly?)
i think the nn fit well with siblings but not the full name, but dont think Maggie or Peggy on the birth certificate is a good idea.
So would love some opinions, thanks

I love Maggie. But Margaret is still a bit Janet and Maureen to me IYSWIM?
Needs another generation before it becomes old-lady-chic.

humptyNdumpy · 03/05/2009 10:15

Doesnt it mean Pearl? Which is a lovley nn.

I personally wouldnt though

noddyholder · 03/05/2009 10:17

I love Margaret but not sure about Peggy, I like Maggie or Meg though.

Babbity · 03/05/2009 10:33

Definitely coming back. Was on our list for DS2 had he been a girl, and a friend has just called her newborn DD Margaret nn Maggie.

Can't recall having ever met or heard of any little girls called Margaret so think it would be quite unusual, and love Meg as a nn.

Am considering it as a possible middle name if we have a DD as both my Mum & MIL are Margarets.

TwoScrambled · 03/05/2009 15:36

Love it! Its a classic that will last well as she gets older.

I would shorten to Margot

cazzybabs · 03/05/2009 15:39

I am thinking of Margaret on the birth certificate but shortening to Peggy for real life for dc4

nkf · 03/05/2009 15:39

Lovely.

nkf · 03/05/2009 15:40

I like Maggie as the nickname more than Peggy though.

PuppyMonkey · 03/05/2009 15:45

Don't like Margaret much (Thatcher connotations).

Peggy or Maggie a million times better on their own.

Hate the MN obsession with "must use a proper name on birth certificate."

SamsMama · 03/05/2009 15:46

Love Margaret! DH's church is St. Margaret's so it was on our list once upon a time. LOVE all the nickname options, esp. Maisy and Meg. (I'm a Meg tho so may be biased! ) Maggie, Peg, Daisy, Pearl, etc, etc. Even Ettie!

Thunderduck · 03/05/2009 15:51

I don't like it at all and Maggie is even worse imho.

bargainhuntingbetty · 03/05/2009 15:53

No it;s too old a name for a little girrl sorry.

Kwini · 03/05/2009 15:59

I know a 25 year-old Maggie who's the life of the party! Also a Mary-Margaret who's anything but dowdy...

MrsEricBana · 03/05/2009 16:02

Was about to suggest Margeurite but then realised I couldn't even spell it (that's my best guess above!). I like Margaret though haven't heard of any LOs called it recently and if push came to shove might have the same reservations as you. (though if my neighbour can call her daughter Elsie then anything is poss)

piscesmoon · 03/05/2009 16:03

I love it-I don't know why it isn't popular-perhaps to do with Maggie Thatcher. I think Maggie is nice but not Peggy. It is a classic name.

mileniwmffalcon · 03/05/2009 16:03

is fab and has a million diminutives, on a par with elizabeth as a classic imo.

MrsEricBana · 03/05/2009 16:03

Yes I can think of a couple of young cool grown up Margarets

PuppyMonkey · 03/05/2009 16:05

It is so not on a par with Elizabeth.

piscesmoon · 03/05/2009 16:11

It isn't quite on a par with Elizabeth, Mary,Anne and Jane but it is close behind.

jellybeans · 03/05/2009 16:11

Too old lady/middle aged for me. I like Maggie on it's own though. I also don't get the obsessions to use a 'proper' name on birth certificate if you won't use it. Few names are now in their original forms anyway, long or otherwise. Most kids these days have names which originally came from other names. I have a long name, was always shortened, pointless just being 'formal' name at the doctors and during exams etc.

ohdearwhatamess · 03/05/2009 16:14

I loathe it (my mother's name).
