What do you think of Margaret?
I love Peggy as a nn, and also Maggie, but not sure aabout Margaret, I have never met oe under the age of 30!! (so due a revival possibly?)
i think the nn fit well with siblings but not the full name, but dont think Maggie or Peggy on the birth certificate is a good idea.
So would love some opinions, thanks

Margaret is a fabulous timeless name and there are plenty of nicknames to choose from if she decides she doesn't like the one you chose when she is older.

AtheneNoctua · 05/05/2009 20:36

Oh bugger. Sorry.

Weegiemum · 05/05/2009 20:39

Is very cool. My Middle name, and my best friend is Maggie, or Maggs.

Do it - its due a really good revival!

Lilymaid · 05/05/2009 20:42

Absolutely fine - apart from Thatcher connotations. She'll live with it for the next 90 odd years, so don't worry about people saying it isn't a good name for a little girl as she won't be one for long.
I like Maggie (friendly connotations)
Meg - as in Little Women

AtheneNoctua · 06/05/2009 07:28

There are loads of fabulous Margaret's in this world. I wouldn't get hung up on Thatcher if you don't like her.

Princess Margaret, for example.

Or look here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margaret_(name)

My favourite on that list is the tennis player named Court.

InternationalFlight · 06/05/2009 07:51

I love it.

I'd have used it for ds2 but, well, he was a boy innit.

seeker · 06/05/2009 07:54

It's classic and lovely. Meg is enchanting for a little girl!

SoupDragon · 06/05/2009 08:01

Margaret always seems rather stern, although I like most of the short versions. One of DD's middle names is Marguerite after my grandmother.

muminmuddle · 06/05/2009 15:21

maggie is a gorgeous name!

Hi tummytickler,
Can I ask if you went with Margaret? My nan was called Margaret but was always called Peggy for short. We are now having our 4th dd (due Jan 30/10) and want to use Margarita with Meg/Meggie as a nn and she'll probably get called 'Little Peg/Peggy' quite a bit because it is cute! It's difficult to follow the regal names of our other girls: twins named Elizabeth Grace (Betsie) and Isabella Jane (Bella) and then a little one called Anastasia Rose (Anna-Rosie) and so we had to go with something old-fashioned and regal too. We're thinking of using either Hope or May as a second name.
What did you do?

tummytickler · 12/10/2009 19:28

Hi
It is still on the list!
I am a bit worried though as i have a 4 year old Pearl, so essentially the same name - but i still love Peggy!
Having a bit of trouble ttc, so i while away the time thinking of names for the lo i am calling! (sad, i know!)
I love your girls names, my Pearl was nearly Betsy! I think Margarita fits perfectly - in fact, new near the top of our list is Rita for a nn, i love this. Betsie, Bella, Annie=Rosie and Rita sound a bit funky!

That's really interesting. Can't deny that I LOVE Pearl but I see what you mean about having the same meaning for both girls. On saying that, we used Isabella and that's a Spanish form of Elizabeth, but with them being twins, we had to make things as fair and even as possible.

DH would like something like Angelia as in the Richard Marx song from years ago (I think she'd get called Angela or Angelina - that would be bad! - by mistake). I told him that if he got his own way with that then I'd have Pearl because I think it's gorgeous. In the end, we both loved Margarita (though we will probably NOT tell her that it's likely she was conceived after several of them - at least until her wedding!) and I think it will be shortened to Meg or Peggy. We decided not to use Maggie - even though we love that too - just in case we go with May as a second name: the Rod Stewart song may not be appreciated when she's 15! I like Rita alo though - it is funky. Dh says he can only think of Corrie's Rita Fairclough or JK Rowlings' Rita Skeeter whereas I love the Rita Hayworth association - it's so glamorous. Oh, that's reminded me: Rita Hayworth made a film called 'Gilda' - now that IS gorgeous!

Sorry to hear you're having trouble ttc. It took us about 7 months with dd4 and I was also getting really worried, especially as I'm 34. It's definitely not sad to think about names though - I really believe you can make something happen by positive thinking so perhaps choosing a name/names will literally bring a child forth into reality!!!

The next problem we have is what happens if dc5 is another girl: what the hell do we do for a name then? Yes, I'm thinking about no.5 already...like I said with positive thinking...! Keep me posted.

Just found this on Wiki:

An anonymous poem:
In search from A to Z they passed,
And "Marguerita" chose at last;
But thought it sound far more sweet
To call the baby "Marguerite."
When grandma saw the little pet,
She called her "darling Margaret."
Next uncle Jack and cousin Aggie
Sent cup and spoon to "little Maggie."
And grandpapa the right must beg
To call the lassie "bonnie Meg."
From "Marguerita" down to "Meg,"
And now she's simply "little Peg."

That MUST be a sign for me!

tummytickler · 13/10/2009 09:49

Oh - its lovely - you could put it on her door!
For number 5 i think Mary would be lovely.
or Cordelia(Cora), Katherine (Kitty), Esmeralda (Zelda).
Maybe it will be a boy!

I was convinced this one was a boy! Love Esmerelda (Esme?) but the dh started doing Hunchback of Notre Dame impressions immediately. Shows how often he's watched the film with our all girl audience!

mathanxiety · 13/10/2009 14:54

I know a lot of Maggies under 30. Also one Marit, the Norwegian version of Margaret, which I love.
