26 weeks pregnant and struggling for a name. DS is Billy. DH is very keen on Katy. I am still undecided as wanted something less popular but suffering from total lack of inspiration. what do you think of Katy and would you go for
Katy Grace
Katy Louise or
Katy Rose

I like Katya too

georgimama · 15/04/2009 20:06

Kate Elizabeth can only be met with bland response by people who have become desensitised to a sensible, pretty name by children called Crystal, Destinee and Porsche. Some people have no clue.

Sorry, bit blunt, wasn't I ?

God knows what you'd all think of MY name

Takver · 15/04/2009 20:56

Now you see, never be rude about a Katy - we're hiding around every corner

screamingabdab · 15/04/2009 20:59

I'm a bit worried you'll all come and beat me up with your gingham boxing gloves

alurkerspeaks · 15/04/2009 23:06

Katy is a great name.

BUT if you do opt for Katy (as opposed to Katherine shortened) she will spend her life explaining to people that her name is Katy. yes, Katy. That's what it says on my birth certificate. Someone always gets clever and tries to use Katherine. In my case often old school bosses who then get annoyed because I appear to ignore them.

Spelling wise, I believe that Katy tends to be used by those who have it as a name wheras Katie is more commonly used by those who get it as a diminutive.

I used to get really bothered about people misspelling my name but have now given up. It does mean that I don't always get e.mail though...

The cider is good BTW!

sleeplessinstretford · 15/04/2009 23:26

my eldest is Catherine May (katie may)she's nearly 15 and is gorgeous- you should do it!

SK1980 · 16/04/2009 08:06

I prefer the spelling Katie, but love the name! :-)

I love the name Katy (prefer it to Katie).

ja9 · 16/04/2009 08:20

i love katie. And Kate. Was on our shortlist. Prefer ie ending buy still love it with a y.

RaspberryBlower · 16/04/2009 08:29

If you're going to have a diminutive name as the 'real' name and the longer version on the birth certificate you have to use both regularly to the child.

Otherwise, the long birth certificate name becomes this obsolete thing that isn't your name.

I have one of these and noone has ever called me it, except in official ways and I just find it annoying and occasionally confusing really because it isn't my name.

RaspberryBlower · 16/04/2009 08:31

Meant to say I do like Katy.

FaintlyMacabre · 16/04/2009 08:34

As a Katherine shortened to Katy from birth that doesn't bother me at all, for some reason. I like the option of being Katherine on formal occasions/documents.

However, don't tell your child what my parents told me- 'We thought you could be Katherine if you were tall and willowy and Katy/Kate if, well, you weren't' Hmmmph.

troutpout · 16/04/2009 08:36

It's nice in that girly way of all names ending in 'eeee' sound ...but i prefer Kate much more...especially as the child gets older

Out of your list i prefer Katy Louise

FaintlyMacabre · 16/04/2009 08:49

Yes, I switched to Kate at about 18/19.

Takver · 16/04/2009 09:37

I also started life as a Katie and switched to Kate at about 8 or 9 (but mainly for convenience because there were too many Katies in my class at school).
I would choose Katy Louise of the three, two good solid names that will take a girl anywhere and never cause her grief.
Another good variant is Kitty - I missed out on it because my parents were worried about anti-Irish prejudice (I have Irish surname too) but its a good name.

pranma · 16/04/2009 11:23

Very few people use Kathleen nowadays, love Katy and with Grace or Rose rather than Louise.

Cies · 16/04/2009 11:42

I like Katy.

Katy Louise is nice, or even Katy Louisa.

I also like Katy Elizabeth.

Good, classic sensible names.

mickeylou · 16/04/2009 12:11

Thanks for all the responses. very few of you actually dont like the name which is good. still slightly concerned by popularity though!

despite this, i think its highly likely this little one is going to be Katy.

I wont be going with Katherine on the birth certificate though (my son is Billy on his not William). i thought i would also use Kate for short and she can decide which she prefers later.

boring.

Peachy · 16/04/2009 13:18

I love the name, ds3 was ging to be a Katy (think we would have baptised katarina but Katy for 'real' iykwim) and I liked the name so much when we had a boy I bought a katy Apple tree instead.

Good choice

DS1 has a katie in his class, none of the others do though

Jojay · 16/04/2009 13:22

Much prefer the 'y' ending to 'ie'

Nice name

ickletickle · 16/04/2009 15:25

sorry what is difference between y and ie?

Katelyn · 16/04/2009 15:29

I'm a Katy Louise - lovely, get called Kate, Katelyn, Katy-Lou....but never wanted to change it....
