I know they both sound a little 'fusty' to some people, but I thought it was definitely going to be Ernest - now quite like Albert!!!
What is the general feel?

By nice comments - ds is now 6 and I do get people saying they love his name. He's past the stage where there's any need for his name to be mentioned. I'm aware there are people who'll dislike it.

Roger can never make a comeback. All that comes in my head is
'and then I gave her a damn good rodgering.'

piscesmoon · 10/04/2009 14:55

My father's middle name was Ernest, he died young and I would love to have used it for a DS, unfortunately his first name was almost as dire and I wouldn't inflict either on my DSs. The fact that my grandparents had odd taste was no reason to pass it on!

Albert is v fashionable again now - a great name!

Ernest... still undecided but think I quite like it.

Tortington · 10/04/2009 15:09

i wouldn't call my kid anything that could be construde by another kid as being anything related to a dick piercing.

notagrannyyet · 10/04/2009 15:18

I wouldn't choose either as a first name. I did think about Albert once for a middle name. It was one of a number of family names we considered.

Can't imagine calling a new born Ernest. Think it might get the same reaction when it's 'called out' at the dentist as the name Herbert got in our dentist's waiting room last week. Herbert was not an old chap in his 70s but a sweet little boy of 5/6. All 3 of my DS burst out laughing at the name.

The poor mother looked at my 15, 13 & 12 year old DS.....I did tell them off later.

Podrick · 10/04/2009 15:19

I think Ernest is fab

peanutbutterkid · 10/04/2009 15:23

I like them both, alibaba.
Okay, I wouldn't choose them myself, but I wouldn't blanche if I heard them, either. I'd think, "What interesting parents that child must have to choose original and not toffy names like that!"

nappyaddict · 10/04/2009 17:35

I love both of them.

MadameCastafiore · 10/04/2009 17:39

Be done with it and call him Big Bird!

Or have 2 so you at least have Bert and Ernie!

TabithaTwitchet · 10/04/2009 20:49

Are you my father in law??? Those are his top two name suggestions. Do actually quite like both in a wouldn't-want-to-name-my-own-child-that-but-like-it-in-principle way.

nooka · 10/04/2009 20:55

I don't like either of them, and my ds has a similar era name. I'm really not keen on Bertie to me it sounds terribly twee.

If you are thinking about Ernest, why not Algernon

thedolly · 10/04/2009 21:06

Albert - Al is cool.
'Ernest no because it is a noun/adjective' she said in earnest .

LaDiDaDi · 10/04/2009 21:12

Albert is nice, good nns with Al, Albie and Bertie to choose from.

Don't like Ernest.

nigglewiggle · 10/04/2009 21:20

Love Albert. Was our first choice of boy's name. Still waiting to use it as we have two DD's!

randomrabbit · 10/04/2009 21:25

no and no

alibaabaa · 10/04/2009 21:48

Evening all - most impressed with the honesty policy that is in place, when I can't look you lot in the eyes!!! LOL!!!
I don't know whether it has made me more inclined to go for them, as few people like them, they won't become popular!!! yay!!
I would like to say, that some of your responses have thoroughly made mine and DP's night - we can't stop laughing at the Herbert situation in the dentist.
Ernest is in short-running due to DP's late grandfather - not because i thought randomly of an old mans' name.
Will let you know if I have been a cruel mother in 3.5 weeks time, and the little cretin comes out of the blue variety!!!
Any other thoughts would still be grateful - even if it is just for the humour value!!!
TIA

Ernest is actually quite sweet. I don't like Albert.

Daffodingles2 · 10/04/2009 21:53

Albert is better, but don't really like either. sorry.

imoverhere · 10/04/2009 21:58

Albert - not for me, mainly cause of the abreviations (why is a word for shortening things so long... I digress) Albie, Bertie - a tad twee for me

Ernest - Like it (although to be honest, wouldn't call my own child it, but wouldn't think 'what were his parents thinking' if I came across an Ernest)

SugarSkyHigh · 10/04/2009 22:00

Albert is ok!
Ernest is godawful

Alishanty · 11/04/2009 14:57

Prefer Albert.

Don't like Ernest sorry.

ChippingIn · 11/04/2009 16:03

Alibaabaa... honestly (again not looking you in the eye ... NO and NO

Albert - would be constantly looking for Victoria... or Ernie....

Ernest - as 'thedolly' said earnestly

imoverhere - thought this might amuse you...
hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia, which is fear of long words.

wabbit · 11/04/2009 16:19

Albert - to my surprise I like it! Bertie's a nice pet form and Alby also cool

motherlovebone · 11/04/2009 18:41

love them both. also Arthur and Eustace
