We live in France and DH is dead keen on Maelys for our daughter (Mah-eh-lys), a Breton name. I'm not so sure it works in English. What do think??? Thanks!

On seeing the name I wouldn't really know how to pronounce it. TBH even with the pronunciation I am not 100% sure how to say it.

Funnybunnyyumyum · 08/04/2009 09:59

I don't think it's fair to give a child a name they will spend their whole life telling people how it's pronounced or spelt. I'm with Hulababy, still can't work out how to pronounce it.

BonsoirAnna · 08/04/2009 10:04

I don't like it at all. There is a little Breton girl in my DD's year at school with this name.

KristinaM · 08/04/2009 10:05

sorry i dont think it works in english

though i'm sure its a lovely name in Breton

belgo · 08/04/2009 10:06

I thought it was pronounced May-lis. It's ok, nothing wrong with it, especially if you are living in France.

BonsoirAnna · 08/04/2009 10:08

Three syllables in Maëlys.

BonsoirAnna · 08/04/2009 10:08

Maëlle is another Breton girl's name.

CharleeInSpring · 08/04/2009 10:16

Mayliegh? as an alternative, i knwo a little girl called that. (May-Lee)

fizzpops · 08/04/2009 10:26

Is it Mar-uh-lees? Cos I like it! Very pretty - doesn't look it though the way I have spelt it... perhaps with softer sounds than I have managed to convey as in French accent.

leaa · 08/04/2009 18:54

So basically 4 think it's difficult in English and 3 think it would be ok... I'm still not sure what to do!!!
I also like Mayliegh, but that would be a very confusing spelling for the French I think. I like the way you say Mar-uh-lees, it is pretty.
Any other ideas?

My beautiful niece is called Maelys! I think it's a gorgeous name, and if you live in France (as my neice does) does it really matter if English people don't immediately know how to pronounce it when they read it? As soon as you hear it it's easy anyway, there are no sounds in it that are difficult for an English speaker to pronounce. It means princess, which I also like. Go for it!

qumquat · 09/04/2009 12:54

If it bothers you at all though, I think it is very popular at the moment, as soon as my sister had named her she found Maelyses everywhere she went!

CoteDAzur · 09/04/2009 13:00

Melis is a Turkish name, and would be pronounced with ease by both French & English.

suchawuss · 09/04/2009 13:13

It's very pretty and so is Melis.
For me the rarer the better.
Unusual spellings don't make a difference if you ask me - what name exactly don't you need to spell out to someone anyway? Even if you're name's Jane it could be Jayne, John could be Jon etc etc...so makes no odds IMO!

goodnightmoon · 09/04/2009 13:44

sounds like a pretty name but i have a difficult to spell and pronounce name and it's a bloody pain in the arse.

leaa · 13/04/2009 10:28

So Melis or Maelys (mah-eh-lys)? Which do you prefer?

OP posts:
SK1980 · 13/04/2009 10:41

Yes but if they live in France they don't need to explain how to pronounce it surely?

SK1980 · 13/04/2009 10:43

I like that you want to give your child a French name, and think it's pretty. i have a welsh name because my parents lived in Wales at the time. I always have to spell it for people and I secretly like that - it's different, but it is an ancient not made up name.

qumquat · 14/04/2009 14:58

I like them both but ince you live in France surely the French name would make more snese?

leaa · 16/04/2009 08:38

Your right, Maelys does make more sense in France than it's equivalent (Melis), but all my family lives in the UK (and we'll probably go back one day), so I'm wondering whether having such a French name is a good idea...

Since DH is so in love with the name, I've been thinking about middle names...

Any ideas of what would go well with Maelys?

I think twinning it with a very traditional english name sounds nice, I like Maelys Elizabeth. But only use it if you like it, you haven't really said what you think of the name, don
Don't let your DP railroad you into it!

On the pronunciation front, my sister told us it rhymed with Smile. It doesn't exactly but I think its easier for British ears to work out than Ma-elise. I tend to think of it as My-elise.

GooseyLoosey · 20/04/2009 11:01

My dcs have Irish names and have always had to spell them. They are quite young still, but I think they quite like telling people what their names are and how to spell them. I would go for it.

LetThemEatCake · 20/04/2009 12:05

I'm afraid I would think it was pronounced Malice. But I'm thick, me
