I need help! my baby girl is 4 weeks old and we still can't decide on her name. in a real dilemma between Martha and Josie. Any thoughts on either name? which shall we go for?

what letter and how many syllables is your surname?

Nancy66 · 07/04/2009 11:33

I think they're both lovely.

Martha is becoming very popular. Will be in the top 10 in the next few years I reckon, so depends if that bothers you. Also there's no obvious shortening or nickname.

Josie has the edge for me.

LilRedWG · 07/04/2009 11:34

Both are lovely. Do either of you have even the slightest preference? Or do any grandparents have a slight preference. Can you have a family vote?

muminmuddle · 07/04/2009 11:35

thanks for that... surname = 1 syllable (begins with n)

Amapoleon · 07/04/2009 11:35

I like both but I prefer Martha.

MrsHappy · 07/04/2009 11:35

I think Josie is pretty cool.
And the longer versions - Josephine and Joseline - are both good names that would suit an adult.

Martha's not bad but as others have said it is about to become very popular.

Metatron · 07/04/2009 11:36

i love Joseline. slightly unusual and can be cuted up for kids but a strong adult name.

YeahBut · 07/04/2009 11:36

I like Martha.
Why not just call her Martha Josie and see what she and you grow into?

muminmuddle · 07/04/2009 11:36

do you think Josie is 'too cute' for an adult??

OP posts:
differentEggD · 07/04/2009 11:38

I would go with Josie then. Why not extend it to Josephine and then it can be a pet name for every day.

Metatron · 07/04/2009 11:39

Not necessarily but think about a lawyer or a teacher etc just think it is nice to have the option!

LilRedWG · 07/04/2009 11:39

I know a 60-something Josie! A strong, matriarchal (sp?) woman - fab name for child or adult.

EasterEggsintheSky · 07/04/2009 11:47

I know a 60 something Josie and she was far from cute. Not a strong matriarchal woman though so unlikely to be the same one Lil!

muminmuddle · 07/04/2009 11:48

I hadn't realised just how popular Martha was becoming.

and not sure I like Josephine enough as a name, hadn't thought of Joseline......

hmmm.... really, i'm in a genuine dilemma... neither me or my other half can make up our minds.

MrsHappy · 07/04/2009 11:49

I do find names ending "-ie" a bit cutesy in general, but of course my view of a name entirely depends on the person wearing it!

If you just like Josie and not the longer versions, go for it.

Not a bad dilemma you've got, choosing between two nice names!

tessofthedurbervilles · 07/04/2009 11:50

she may end up being a jo if you go for Josie.
I like Martha most....

Marthasmama · 07/04/2009 11:51
  • don't really need to say what I think..... My dd was named after my granny and is still unusual round my way.
muminmuddle · 07/04/2009 11:52

are these Josies you know pronounced 'Josee' or 'Jozee'?

OP posts:
Cadmum · 07/04/2009 11:52

I would prefer Josie.

Josceline is a beautiful name that can be shortened to Josie but I don't find Josie babyish...

Plonker · 07/04/2009 11:53

Definitely Josie, lovely name ...and Josephine is really pretty with lots of variations of nn's (Jo, Josie, Fifi)

I like Jodie too

I really don't like Martha. I know that it's increasing in popularity so I'm in a minority with disliking it.

TaurielTest · 07/04/2009 11:54

If it's really just between those two, toss a coin (heads for Josie, tails for Martha), then see how you feel deep down about what comes out. If you're disappointed, pick the other name.
Sounds daft but often works for me when I'm stuck with a binary choice

sandpebbles · 07/04/2009 11:54

I love the name Josie. Don't like Martha as much.
congratulations on your new baby

Cadmum · 07/04/2009 11:54

I know two Josies One is pronounced Joezee (from the UK) the other is Joesee (from Canada). Not sure that the nationality is relevant though...

ForeverOptimistic · 07/04/2009 11:55

I prefer Martha. I want to like Josie but it just doesn't do it for me.

EasterEggsintheSky · 07/04/2009 12:00

Definitely prefer Josie (Jo-see) but couldn't it be short for Joanna as well? In fact, any name starting with Jo could have Josie as a nn.
