I need help! my baby girl is 4 weeks old and we still can't decide on her name. in a real dilemma between Martha and Josie. Any thoughts on either name? which shall we go for?

I'd say that if you're calling her Josie on your own then that's the name you want to call her. Don't worry about what other people think, they'll love it once it's attached to your gorgeous DD! For what it's worth, I'd always pronounce it Jo-zee, no-one ever pronounces Rosie Ro-cee do they?

Bettymum · 20/04/2009 14:01

muminmuddle has your DD been named??!

muminmuddle · 20/04/2009 23:13

thanks so much for asking bettymum!

we're registering her on friday........name tbc.... will let you know.

re Josie: still can't resolve the Jo-see/Jo-zee issue, although I think because we've taken so long it has become more of an issue. as i've said, i prefer Jo-zee, but i think most people pronounce it Jo-see. either way, it seems that it might become annoying for her overtime. how do you pronounce it by the way???!

re Martha: is popularity such a crime? i grew up with a very unusual name and i'm not sure it's such a blessing.

I like Martha better

OAPmum · 22/04/2009 18:48

I like Martha but as a thought what about Rowena

TheOldestCat · 22/04/2009 18:52

Muminmuddle - I think the pronunciation of Josie depends on where you are in the country. DD is Jo-see (we live in the south east and I am from Wales). But some of DH's relatives (from Manchester and Liverpool) call her Jo-zee. Doesn't bother me or her!

Martha and Josie are both lovely names so you're onto a winner either way.

I have the most popular name of the 70s and it didn't really bother me as a child, I just got used to there being five others in the same year. Now there are 30 plus of us at work, but it doesn't really matter.

ARAG · 22/04/2009 23:09

Hi muminmuddle, Two lovely names! Either way is a good choice. I'll watch this thread to see what you end up going with.

Popularity is not a crime. 'Sarah' is a beautiful beautiful name, for example. So is 'Anna.' Neither is spoilt by their popularity. Likewise, 'Martha' is lovely and strong and feminine no matter how many there are.

I say Jo-zee, btw. Sweet, strong, kind. I've heard of it as a short name for Jocelyn. It reminds me of another name, Essie.

Do the name meanings sway you at all?

I agree with what qumquat: once the name is attached to your little one there won't be a second thought and people will love it because they love her. IMO, I think it's sweet to have existed these few weeks with your new daughter without a name. For goodness' sake, she is not suffering from it! It will make a fun story to tell her when she's older, how you wanted just the right name and how, in the end, you got it. Take your time, get some sleep, and no pressure!

When you do decide, as a reward to yourself and DD, get this personalised storybook: "My Very Own Name". We have it and it is brilliant.

Mum are you out of your muddle?

BottySpottom · 24/04/2009 20:38

Oooh yes, what did you decide?

I used to think that people who couldn't decide on names were flaky too, but it happened to us with DC3!

Bettymum · 29/04/2009 10:09

Bumping again

TheOldestCat · 30/04/2009 19:58

What did you go for in the end?

angrypixie · 30/04/2009 20:15

Martha is pious and Josie in plump in my weird world!

Also, the thing I don't get about these threads is what the hell have you been calling the poor child for the last 4 weeks? 'The Baby' ???

walkingprimrose · 30/04/2009 21:49

What's so difficult to get about it?Obviously the parents have probably been calling the baby Martha or Josie over the past few weeks... or even, shock horror,'The Baby'!! This is not going to cause any psychological distress to the 'poor thing'.

Do you imagine that any parent sets out to have a name crisis?

Come on muminamuddle, where are you??

humptyNdumpy · 30/04/2009 22:06

Our dd had a name from the moment she was born, she still spent the first few weeks being called 'the baby' - I'm sure she didnt mind

Gillyan · 01/05/2009 00:18

I've been watching this thread and I am so intrigued!! tell us!

walkingprimrose · 01/05/2009 21:08

I'm going to keep bumping this thread until we get a reply!!

GossipMonger · 02/05/2009 17:49

mumblecrumble · 02/05/2009 17:54

We called our dd a 'common' name and everyone felt a need to tell us it was common.....

We LOVE her name and she suits it.
