What do you think?

DH and I both like it but are worried about it being shortened to cassy which is quite girly

....well, fil's reaction on hearing his name for the first time was...."what is that, a bloody Eskimo name"...well something along those lines ....
I suppose as there are a fair few eastern europeans here, Yannic will go reatively unnoticed here....
well, if dh had his way es would have been Merlin and ms would have been Orion...so, I reckin those Kids came off lightely ...

Cassian, to me, oozes upper middleclass....well...could be in a Jill Cooper novel, too....
it is actually, after having said it to myself a few times, a lovely sounding name....but it still brings on those images...iykwim...

tbh though...I think it really doesn't matter what a child is called... if you meet them you are not, as an outsider anyway, really think any further about the name...it is part of that person and as such will "blend" into one...not sure I am making much sense...

QuackQuackQuackQuack · 03/04/2009 19:42

I love cassius more each time I hear it

Gleb is either russian or polish...I believe....so, probably a real common name in that culture....lovely boy, too....although, Gleb does evoke images of phlegm in me....not sure why...

oh, my younger 2 Class names lists are brill...there are no 2 children with the same firstname in either class...which I think is fantastic....

FairLadyOfMuslinCloth · 03/04/2009 19:46

a "famous" Gleb

cherrysunday · 03/04/2009 20:31

I would check the meaning - It can also mean a protective case.

Our ds1 is Cassius and it really suits him I'm so glad we chose it!

LetThemEatCake · 03/04/2009 20:53

"Cassian, to me, oozes upper middleclass....well...could be in a Jill Cooper novel, too...."

...they may be sainst or such, but it still makes me think of phlgm...lol....am I the only one....

tilbatilba · 04/04/2009 01:36

I knew a lovely kid called Catallus known as Tully which is an easier nickname for a boy than Cassie

tigerdriver · 04/04/2009 02:11

Til

I love this Latin theme but...

Tully is short for Cicero (Marcus Tullius Cicero) not Catullus, they are two different people, albeit both dead Romans.

I think Cassius and Cassian are both a bit, well, pretentious really. As is Tully.

I dunno why we bother defending our choices lockets. Bitter people who are trapped in the mire of their own mundane tastes and lives will always find so-called 'unusual' choices pretentious.

If being pretentious has saved our dc from being stuck with monikers like Jack, John or Emily then long live pretension, say I!!!!

Leannabanana · 04/04/2009 10:03

it is lovely. i really like it i wouldn't worry about it sounding at all girly....its a bit like Jesse....boys called Jess and Cass are no different to girls called Billie IMO

FairLadyOfMuslinCloth · 04/04/2009 12:26

lockets...which is why you are, hopefully, not offended by my possibly offensive comments about the name
Same as it doesn't bother me when people tell me that they hate my Kids names

ruty · 04/04/2009 16:30

i wanted Sacha for a boy, but unfortunately it has been turned into a girl's name in UK. Same with Misha.

ruty · 04/04/2009 16:30

or Mischa...

FairLadyOfMuslinCloth · 04/04/2009 16:44

oh Sascha in Germany is still very much a boys name...you are living in the wrong country

randomname · 04/04/2009 21:09

I love it Dh hates it unfortunatly!

loulou35 · 04/04/2009 21:16

i think its a bit er, pretentious - don't think they'd thank you for itIMHO !!!!

well, really really no offence, but I think it sounds a bit cheesy- unless you are a Windsor- I think it sounds pretentious or porn-ish Sadly, wherever you child is socialised and educated, anything 'out of the norm' can cause issues, IMHO an unusual (? feminine) name might not help....

FairLadyOfMuslinCloth · 04/04/2009 21:39

lockets, just looked at your profile...gorgeous Kids and I think I now know why you called your son Cassius....it must be incredable hard when you are a teacher to find a name that hasn't been spoiled for you....
