Zephyrus for a boy? are we just being silly now?

dh really likes it. I quite like it. Could still shorten to Zephy (which is one o f the reasons I like Zephaniah) and would go well with Alexander, which I like as a middle name. Also has mythological overtones. which is always a drawcard for me, and works well with dd and ds (Phoenix and Cassian - I know Cassian is not a myth character as such, but I can imagine a winged horse or a king in a myth called Cassian ... but hey ho)

So. Are we being daft?

Cassius/Cassandra/Caspar are ok- my point being is that they're all 'wacky' so the Z one
(can't remember it as it's made up) goes well, and re Phoenix if it's good enough for Mel B it's reason enough for anyone sane to not use it...

ah, you can't be put off by the likes of a spice girl. It's the positive meaning of a bird that lives forever, constantly renews itself etc that we were drawn to. Symbol of hope. Special circs in our case as to why this was particularly relevant to us, but also just loved the name and the symbolic meaning. Of course people just think I love Mel B or have one of the acting family. Hey ho.

But point taken on Zephyrus, i had my doubts. Nice name for a dog perhaps.

And Cassian not 'wacky' - it's Irish, meaning 'curly haired'. Not made up, not a brand name, not anything kooky at all.

I'm Irish and I have never come across the name Cassian.

I googled it and I think it does. No Irish websites give it as Irish.
Perfectly OK name, but not Irish.

LetThemEatCake · 01/04/2009 00:11

maybe that too. Also the name of an early Italian saint (patron saint of teachers, was stabbed to death by his pupils wielding their styluses (styli??)

here

we have Irish friend called Keiron (little dark one, for the benefit of LadyG) and he has heard of the name cassian but says usually pronounced Cash-en

I don't hate Zephyrus, but dh offers you his special naming service at no extra charge - channelling his inner schoolboy he assures me the schoolyard taunt will be, "Zephyrus the Virus?"

believe me this service has seen off a LOT of my choices

I'm liking the saint. Though I'd have thought he was a bit of a wimp to go down under a few styli. They weren't that sharp.

LetThemEatCake · 01/04/2009 00:16

Irish

phdlife - dh and I are LOL and have been totally put off!! thank you to you and your dh!!

there is a play called GALLANT CASSIAN, he is no wimp, survives all sorts of fights with merely a broken fingernail. Dreadful play!!!

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 01/04/2009 00:19

A broken fingernail can be very traumatic. I think you are underestimating his suffering. Also his gallantry.

phdlife · 01/04/2009 00:24

you are welcome, LTEC

cory · 01/04/2009 08:34

Cassian (=Cassianus) is a Roman derivation of Cassius: would mean "adopted from the Cassius family".

jellybeans · 01/04/2009 12:36

I like your other kids names but not keen on this one although I love Zeph as a short name.
