Is James too boring?

Due first baby in about 7 weeks and am wondering about names - we know he is a boy.

We want something traditional, not too dating for the poor little lad and not anything off the wall. We are both in our mid - late 30s and really don't want a son called cougar or bracken or anything...

We both like James, and are seriously considering it. It does have family connections - my Dad is James and so was my Mums father.

But now I am worrying it is just too, well, dull. And also too popular at the same time.

What do you lot think?

DH's name is Andrew George and we are also thinking about using one of those as a middle name if that is any help. I like James Andrew better, but George is a family name on his side so he prefers that.

I like James, i have a Jamie, both nice friendly approachable spellable names!

I like George better than Andrew.

rubyslippers · 16/03/2009 19:51

i love the name James

also Benjamin, Daniel, Simon, Paul

gegs73 · 16/03/2009 19:53

James is nice and I know a few but not loads of them. I also really like the name Jamie.

TheFallenMadonna · 16/03/2009 19:53

No, it's lovely.

KristinaM · 16/03/2009 19:53

Andrew james and George are all lovely names and will not date. Jamie is cute for a baby or young child as well

I think James Andrew sounds much better than James George

I love James and I also think that as George is also a single syllable name you could easily use both Andrew and George as middle names:

James Andrew George sounds really good (imo).

onadietcokebreak · 16/03/2009 19:56

James is fab my DS would have been a James/Jamie if I could have called him it (an exes name so a tad too close!)

EdwardBear · 16/03/2009 19:56

James George doesnt really go together though, too many 'J' sounds.
Would have to be James Andrew

I prefer George to James as first name. Bit more interesting. Have you any other family names you could use as a middle name?

Or how about Alexander George?

moshie · 16/03/2009 20:03

Lovely name, classic and timeless.

Agree with Shona, I really like James Andrew George.

mags98 · 16/03/2009 20:05

Alexander is no good as our nephew is called that.

Anyone know any names derived from James that might be an option?

I love the name Jamie, my nephew is James Andrew - known as Jamie.

McDreamy · 16/03/2009 20:07

James is lovely - a classic name.

Mintyy · 16/03/2009 20:09

No its not too boring. Its lovely.

shonaspurtle · 16/03/2009 20:09

Seamus and Hamish are both forms of James.

wombleprincess · 16/03/2009 20:37

no. a positive breath of fresh air in these times of rampant "originality" i quote a recent threat "find me a traditional name that hasnt been used yet"..

chequersmate · 16/03/2009 20:40

I love it, DH and I were torn between James Joseph and Joseph James for a boy.

We sort of went for Joseph in the end, on the basis that we like the nn Joe, but didn't like any of the nn for James.

I love the name James though and think we might use it as a first name if we had a boy, as we ended up having a girl anyway.

James is not boring....it's lovely.
It's my DS's name...I love it.

EdwardBear · 16/03/2009 20:52

I do think James is a touch boring, sorry.
How about Jim as a nn?

squeaver · 16/03/2009 20:55

James is my favourite boy's name. Couldn't have it in our case because:

  • it's my nephew's name
  • it's an ex-boyfriend's name
  • dd is a girl
Stinkyfeet · 16/03/2009 20:58

I have a James so I think it's lovely! To address the popularity of the name issue - my James is almost 6, we have only ever met one other of his age, and that includes his school year group, in which there are at least 50 boys - he's the only James.

ilikeyoursleeves · 16/03/2009 21:02

MY DS is officially a James but known as Jamie- it's a fab name!

diedandgonetodevon · 16/03/2009 21:04

No, not boring. James is a lovely name

bringonthetrumpets · 16/03/2009 21:07
