Is James too boring?

Due first baby in about 7 weeks and am wondering about names - we know he is a boy.

We want something traditional, not too dating for the poor little lad and not anything off the wall. We are both in our mid - late 30s and really don't want a son called cougar or bracken or anything...

We both like James, and are seriously considering it. It does have family connections - my Dad is James and so was my Mums father.

But now I am worrying it is just too, well, dull. And also too popular at the same time.

What do you lot think?

DH's name is Andrew George and we are also thinking about using one of those as a middle name if that is any help. I like James Andrew better, but George is a family name on his side so he prefers that.

Lone voice here but, yes, I think james is very dull. I also think Jamie is very girly and wussy

James is a lovely name, not so keen on Jamie, but James isn't boring at all, nice for kids and adults alike.

bringonthetrumpets · 16/03/2009 21:09

you could shorten it to Jay....

Leannabanana · 16/03/2009 21:21

My DS name.....i love james and so does he. we call him Bob.....jimbob got shortened to Bob....

It's not a name I would choose, find it very insipid. Don't get me wrong, I love traditional names but not this one.

secondbump · 16/03/2009 21:30

Nothing wrong with it, but I too find it a little dull/unimaginative. It is also quite common.... You did ask .

NormaJeanBaker · 16/03/2009 21:37

Love it. My bro is a Jamie and there are some good ones around. Who cares what we think anyway? You like it you use it darlin.

noonki · 16/03/2009 21:46

love it.

mags98 · 16/03/2009 22:02

I don't know if I would necessarily have it as a first choice if it wasn't for the family connection, probably a middle name, but I do like it.

I do like George too though.

Trouble is, I have a list of names I like, but DH shakes his head at all of them. The only one we seem to agree on is James!

I at least want us to have an alternative or two in case he just isn't a James when he arrives.

The name is Bond. James Bond.

Such a boring chap. Not!

HolidaysQueen · 16/03/2009 22:17

I find it really dull generally, sorry - I just think it is unimaginative when there are so many beautiful, less used names around. However, if it has family connections then I think that is a good reason for using it - I really like it when people honour family members.

Another vote for Jamie!

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 16/03/2009 22:31

James is a lovely name. I know of zillions aged about 18 (it was obviously in vogue in about 1980) but none who are younger. Go for it!

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 16/03/2009 22:33

Err. 1990.

HedKandi · 16/03/2009 22:34

love james,

stong, no nonsense name,

jay, jamie, good as nick names too,

lydiathetattooedlady · 17/03/2009 20:12

i love the name james, was my little brothers middle name-lots of suggestions for jay and jamie as nn but what about jimmy?? that was his and it was such a cute name for a cheeky little boy! will be my july-expected baby boys middle name!

fridayschild · 17/03/2009 21:59

I like both James and Jamie. I don't think it's too popular a name. I have a boy in year 1 and a boy in pre-school. Both classes are resolutely James-free.

pointydog · 17/03/2009 22:10

No it's not too boring. It's a fine name. I never tire of it

Bleatblurt · 17/03/2009 22:13

Love it!
