As Scots living on "the other side of the border" we want to promote our Scottish heritage by giving our kids Celtic names. We have a Mc surname so also feel that celtic names match well.

I've just realised that we've got a lot of island names on our short list and wondered what you guys though?

Girls:
Iona
Ailsa
Ailia
Skye
Cara
Shona (their is an island called Shuna)

Boys:
Harris
Lewis
Arran

Aberdeen has a river Dee (and a Don too)

CalaLilly · 11/03/2009 18:48

I think I've got it Phlox and if it's what I think it's lovely! It's got a bit of a French/ romantic feel to it!

I think it's actually Lorne. Well, that's the place name, anyway. There is a Lord Lorne who is heir to the duchy of Argyll.

CalaLilly · 11/03/2009 18:49

I only know about the river Dee in Chester because of Hollyoaks

I have a relative called Lorne...not too sure about it. Struan is lovely.

Phlox · 11/03/2009 18:55

Cala, it sounds like you've got it

expatinscotland · 11/03/2009 18:57

He's definitely a Struan, too.

We'd have another name chosen for DD1, but when she was born she didn't look like it at all.

After a few days in hospital - it was a difficult delivery - she was an angel baby and the midwives would come and see her and take her away to feed her whilst I slept.

And one said, 'If you ask me, she looks a wee [her name].'

And she did!

Phlox, originally I thought it could be Atholl or Blair- both of which are quite nice!

mirrensmum · 11/03/2009 19:23

expat - I have one, ner ner nah ner ner!

We actually spelt it Mirren, but wish now we had spelt it Muirann (if that is right!) but didn't as it would have not really gone with ds1's name.

dizzydixies · 11/03/2009 19:29

Callan or coran
Hector is brilliant and you can't get away from Hamish!

I know a lady called Taryn which is nice

Lexie is Scottish for sparkling

cala expat and I both hankered after a wee Muiranne but she had a boy and my DH and I decided as he is Irish and I'm Scottish we'd not pick too celtic sounding names so ended up with one Latin, one Greek and one Italian for our girls

Phlox · 11/03/2009 19:37

Moving away from Islands I know but if DS had been a girl I wanted to call her Netta, which is the Scottish version of Janet.

dizzydixies · 11/03/2009 19:41
BikeRunSki · 11/03/2009 19:46

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVEEEEEEEEEE Ailsa, I wanted to called DS Ailsa if he were a girl. I just love it, although we have no Scottish connections beyond hillwalking.

Also ADOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRE Iona, know a lovely, lovely old Iona.

Lewis and Harris - good!
Arran - Sorry, don't like it.

Rassay?
Torridon?

expatinscotland · 11/03/2009 19:54

I was so convinced DS was a third girl I was calling him Muireann until the scan showed he was definitely a boy.

I patted the bump and said, 'Sorry for calling your Muireann, Struan.'

dizzydixies · 11/03/2009 19:58

Ramsay

raindroprhyme · 11/03/2009 23:03

phlox think i have worked it out and is beautiful name.

Islands seem a bit twee for this scot but....
ailsa has always been a favourite of mine.
Esme
Elspeth
i would go all out celtic plus spelling.
Ruaridh and Eilidh being favourites of mine.
Coran lovely.

good luck choosing from all the wonderful suggestions. My list has just doubled in size again from this thread.Arrghhhh.

raindroprhyme · 11/03/2009 23:19

just thought of another one

Mungo

dizzydixies · 11/03/2009 23:24

raindrop, DD1 would have been Coran/Corin had she come out blue

blinks · 11/03/2009 23:27

Cora is nicer i think...

Cal is one of my fave boys names and is shortened from Callum.

Granny22 · 11/03/2009 23:42

I also knew a family (7 or 8 of them) all with Scottish Island names. Dad was Haris, boys were Coll, Lewis, and Barra - girls Isla, Iona, Skye and my favourite - Eriskay.

wrongsideof40 · 12/03/2009 00:06

ho some suggestions - I always think the best names are those that are quite unusual without shouting it from the rooftops IYKWIM ?

Boys
Campbell
Cameron
Crichton
Mair
Rowan
Moray (Muh - ray)
Coll - like this never heard it before though !
Iain (how many do you meet nowadays ? - due a revival! )

Girls
Morven
Mhairi (Vari)
Moray (mo - ray)
Ishbel ? (no - me neither)
Stroma
catriona
and I do like Shona

MsHighwater · 12/03/2009 00:24

I went to college with a Lorne. He got loads of mail addressed to "Lorna".

Where is the island called Cala? I live in Scotland and I don't think I've ever heard of it.

IME, the more masculine sounding island names are often used as dog's names (Jura, Coll). Lewis is very very very very very common popular as a boy's name up here.

I once encountered a child whose name was Tiree. I only know this because said child was being shouted at by the accompanying adult in the airport in Lanzarote (just off the Glasgow flight). Dressed in white T-shirt, red shorts and with at least one ear pierced, I have absolutely no idea what sex s/he was.

CalaLilly · 12/03/2009 09:47

MsHighwater , I don't think there is an island called Cala... my log in name is Cala Lilly and people have been referring to me by Cala! It does make a lovely name though- I mentioned it on the flower thread

This thread is ace- so many lovely suggestions! I'm really glad i started it and their are so many other Scottish name fans out there. It's going to be so hard to choose just one or two names though(i.e. for mn NOT for twins... I hope )
