CalaLilly · 11/03/2009 17:25

As Scots living on "the other side of the border" we want to promote our Scottish heritage by giving our kids Celtic names. We have a Mc surname so also feel that celtic names match well.

I've just realised that we've got a lot of island names on our short list and wondered what you guys though?

Girls:
Iona
Ailsa
Ailia
Skye
Cara
Shona (their is an island called Shuna)

Boys:
Harris
Lewis
Arran

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Atholl
Kinnear
Girvan is also a name I've heard used
Fyffe

I knew a wee boy called Clyde and I loved it

wee Clyde!!!

dragonbutter · 11/03/2009 18:22

I know a Torridon.

dizzydixies · 11/03/2009 18:24

Torrin means clan chief

I fear I've lost the Scottish Islands theme here though

I think someone needs to use Muireann indeed, dizzy.

CalaLily - how do you feel about Muiranne pn Mirren?

expat and I would give you our full support seeing as we couldn't have one

expatinscotland · 11/03/2009 18:27

My girls have female Gaelic names, but not island names.

There's also a ferry called Shuna .

Scarba and Sanda, too.

expatinscotland · 11/03/2009 18:27

Aye, I'd have loved to add a Muireann to the lot, but 'twas not to be.

Struan's a great name, however .

The nursery has a Bear Factory bear called Clyde.

Phlox · 11/03/2009 18:32

Wish i'd thought of Struan.

What about Tobermory?

CalaLilly · 11/03/2009 18:34

Phlox, sorry to ask you personal info and thanks for what you did disclose as that is very helpful

Haha on the Muireann thing... do I detect a running joke (erm, just slightly Miss quick off the mark!). Sadly DH has banned names that begin with M as he doesn't like alliteration.

I quite like Murn rather than Mirren but only cos of Braveheart!

Clyde makes me think of a sealion I once met in a water park! And also Tiger Tim from Clyde 1 fm who i used to listen to at 10am every night during my teens

Thurso anyone?

I'm really getting into this now!

expatinscotland · 11/03/2009 18:35

A student I worked with came up with it when I was pregnant with DD2 and we didn't know if it was a boy or a girl. I had no boy names and this student said, 'Why not call it Struan if it's a lad?'

So when we got a lad, he was always Struan.

We have a girl who is Helen in Scots Gaelic and another who is Rose in Gaelic.

dizzydixies · 11/03/2009 18:36

its pn the same Calalilly but the old spelling

Phlox · 11/03/2009 18:36

Cala, have you got it then?

expatinscotland · 11/03/2009 18:38

How about Dee for a girl, after the river?

How about some river and loch names?

Phlox · 11/03/2009 18:39

How about Lorn?

expatinscotland · 11/03/2009 18:39

Or Lorna?

CalaLilly · 11/03/2009 18:40

I've narrowed it down to 2 names Phl0x- both from near the start of the Alphabet... am I anywhere close?

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 11/03/2009 18:42

How about Colonsay or Jura?

Phlox · 11/03/2009 18:44

Don't think so. More near the end of the alphabet. Acutually closer to Aberfeldy (alongside Loch Tay)

shonaspurtle · 11/03/2009 18:45

I've got a Rory for exactly the same reason as your dp (I've got a gaelic name that's always misspelled/mispronounced).

However, imagine my frustration amusement to discover that Ruari/Ruaridh etc are now such popular names that if you say your child is called Rory you're immediately asked how you spell that.

So, Ruari won't cause a child any angst.

I know a little girl called Tiree - v pretty.

CalaLilly · 11/03/2009 18:45

Lorn makes me think of sausage- but I do like Lorna... go figure?!?

expatinscotland, isn't the river Dee in Chester? River and Loch names are a food idea.. "That's a Fyne wee lad you've got there". And we could just sentence a future daughter we have to a life time of teasing by calling her Nessy!

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 11/03/2009 18:47

Well, there's definitely a river Dee up here, Cala! If there's one down south, I wouldn't know. I'm rather ignorant about geography in the south.
