What is the general consensus on this name mumsnetters? Baby born last week and DH and I still haven't agreed on a name! We both like this but are a bit worried about cat jokes, etc!

I was nearly a Kitty (but ended up with different shortening for Katherine as we have Irish surname too & my parents didn't want overly Irish sounding name at the time because of the troubles).
I like it and would have been very happy with it as a name both as a child and now as an adult. I don't see anything wrong with it as an adult name. There are plenty of Kittys in Ireland & I've run into a fair few in England too although of course its not as heavily used as Cathy/Katy etc.

BabyValentine · 04/03/2009 19:44

I think it is lovely (twas on our list for DD).

gonaenodaethat · 04/03/2009 19:47

Love it. We have a Catherine who is often shortened to this. It's cute.

Wilkiepedia · 04/03/2009 19:48

Nope - cat

gonaenodaethat · 04/03/2009 19:49

Nice for a teenager too

Pinchypants · 04/03/2009 19:49

Love it, was on our shortlist for both, short for Katherine or Katya (I'm half Polish).

Qally · 04/03/2009 19:49

It's lovely, but I'd officially have her down as Katherine, just to increase options if she hates it as an adult. (My son is Toby, but his birth certificate is Tobias. Options are good.)

It is an adorable name, though.

I know a 10 year old kitty. In her case its short for Caitlin but very few people know thats actually her name. I first met her when she was 3 (at playgroup with my dd) and I thought it was very unusual, although nice and associated it with older ladies but now I love it

Bertolli · 04/03/2009 19:56

love it

YesSirICanBoogie · 04/03/2009 19:57

Gorgeous. It's on out shortlist. I have a thing about the name Katherine but have just noticed someone suggested caitlin which is much nicer. Go for it!

ten10 · 04/03/2009 20:04

becoming very popular around here,
three of them at DS's small playgroup

oliviasmama · 04/03/2009 20:30

Pretty, lovely name

bluebump · 04/03/2009 20:33

Lovely name, I would happily have Kitty as a name if I had a DD, DP however hates it.

ARAG · 04/03/2009 20:40

Sweet! (I'd go for it as a use-every-day nickname, but in any case it is very cute.)

dooit · 04/03/2009 20:47

I have an 8 year old Kitty. I adore the name. I chose it because it's traditional yet unusual/uncommon without being wacky or just plain made up. I also chose the name Ruby for DD1 on the same grounds but that was 14 years ago and there are millions of Rubys now. Doubtless there will be millions of Kittys soon too.GRRRRRRRRRR.

LiffeyBag · 04/03/2009 20:56

I like it as a nn, but I would never put it on the bc. I know there are a few mners with daughters called this, hope they're not reading.

Put Katherine on the bc. Katya is lovely.

cheesesarnie · 04/03/2009 20:58

i love it.i know a grown up kitty and shes as beutiful as her name!

babyalready · 05/03/2009 09:00

Thank you so much to everyone. Sorry took a while to get back! You have all allayed my worries!

Love it, love it, love it. If she doesn't like Kitty when she is older she can be Kit.

screamingabdab · 05/03/2009 09:28

Like it, but i'd maybe give her Katherine on the birth certificate

AnathemaDevice · 05/03/2009 09:36

My bump is going to be Kitty if it's a girl. Well, Kathleen, to be known as Kitty, named after my great granny. We're giving her (if it is a her) a longer name so she has the option to be Kate, Kit, Kath, etc if she wants. I'm just hoping it doesn't become too popular!

frazzledoldbag · 05/03/2009 19:50

My Kitty is actually Caitlin on her b. cert. but nobody ever calls her that. In fact hardly anyone even knows. But yes, I guess it's an option if she decides she wants a change when she's older (but I hope she doesn't - IMO Kitty is much nicer than Caitlin and in retrospect have no idea why I called her that in the first place- hormones, moi?)
Apologies to any mothers of Caitlins out there! Kitty is just much more 'her'. and she does get 'Kit' for short sometimes which I think is lovely.
