I love this name - DH vetoed it for DS.....lots of raised eyebrows when I mentioned it at the time too! Anyway, heard someone calling a little Gabriel today and I have name .

would def like to use this if we ever have another ds.....and if i could convince DH!

I also think it's beautiful. 'Twas going to be DS's name until a fortnight before he was born but then I was sent for a scan to see if he was breech. He wasn't but the midwife said 'that is a big lad you've got there. . .' I duly came home and said to dh that if he was going to spend half his life on a rugby field perhaps he'd need a slightly more 'substantial' name so he became George. Am hoping if we have a DS2 he's not built quite so much like a prop forward so we can use it. . .

Love it!

Congratulations Laumiere.

laumiere our Gabe has a million variations too - Gabri-bumble, Gabri-chub, Gabsickle and of course, Gabri-woo!
Never shortened to gay, by anyone.
If it helps - we had lots of raised eyebrows when he was first named (by me!) and now EVERYONE loves it!

ours used to get called Baybriel by a friend's dd lol
and Wailbriel by us because he never stopped crying

I don't like it - but only because of literary connotations (most people aren't into literary historical fiction so would never come across Gabriel Reid Mallett in Dunnett's books.) I have friends with a Guvriel - the original Hebrew form I believe - and he is a gorgeous little boy.

If you and your DH are both petite, blonde and delicate looking I would perhaps think again - but names that err on the feminine side of the spectrum on men who are butch or tall and generally confident work very well and can be extremely attractive, imo.

brilliant name..........and again my DH hates it....both DSs say "gaayyyyyy" when i mention it but that might be a regional thing....it truly is great and i might even get my way yet

I don't mind it but find it a little 'soft' for a boys' name...

I have heard of a Gabe. I quite like that. It sounds sort of cowboy-ish iyswim.

I like Gabe. Not totally mad about Gabriel but I don't dislike it.

I prefer Reuben (if you were the poster torn between the two names)

I'm always wary of giving a child a name beginning with R, in case they can't pronounce their r's - but that's just my take on it.

Woobin just doesn't have the same ring to it as Reuben.

It is now on our list for ds due in 2 weeks.

It ahas always been dp's favourite name and last time i was pg i completely vetoed it! (even when his ex wife was pg with their daughter 14 years ago - and she vetoed it too)

It has now grown on me so much that i love it! A few months ago he dismissed it and said he no longer 'wanted it'.

We decided on Harry, but a family member has used this and now i want something different (aswell as realising how popular Harry actually is everywhere else! ).

Dp now has agreed with me it's on the maybe pile, i know everyone will dislike it in the families, colleagues, friends etc but who cares?

Hang on though, Gabriel and Georgia? Not a big deal but some people say you should avoid that.

Wolfblass · 28/02/2009 16:54

Because it's two G's?

Report
bytheLiffey · 28/02/2009 16:57

yes. although if it's a miss and a master I think it matters less. IF it matters at all. But I remember feeling that two names beginning with the same letter wasn't quite ideal. Silly.

my nephew is Gabriel and he is 12. He says he was called gayboy etc and he hates his name so he would prefer to be called something normal- like pete....
However he is mature enough to cope with name calling!
He is gorgeous by the way too!

Love it. And has a wonderful meaning. I wanted it for ds2, shortened to Gabe. But our surname ends in 'el' so Gabriel ...el just wasn't working. Boo .

[Also dh hated it, so good luck!]

Both DH and I love this name. Don't be put off by potential nicknames. Children can be picked on about anything, and any name, even the most simple name can be made into something offensive at the hands of cruel children.
