CAN'T think of a girls name. Have a Beatrice already. Wish I was having a boy, I have just three boys names and I love them all. Have no girls names that are absolute must haves. Our surname is a single syllable, rhymes with Toad (!).
(Have bad cold, want to decide in next week or two, due March, DD1 didn't have a name for ages and want to avoid that, so really really need help).
Can anyone look at the following list and suggest similar alternatives, or give opinions on any of the names?

Was thinking of:
Ottilie (but suddenly seems to be becoming alarmingly popular!)
Variations on Rose - Rose itself, or Rosamund, Rosalie, Rosanna, Rosie
Daisy
Vivi
Poppy
Milly
Camilla (too royal now? always liked it because of Camellias)
Florence
Lottie
Cleo
Clemmie
Maggie
Ella (but there are thousands...)
Bella
Christabel (Bella)
Dora (but now too associated with 'the Explorer'?)
Lola
Tallulah (Tallie) ?!
Honor
Xanthe (too Greek?)

Rosamund is lovely.
Vita??
Camille rather than Camilla?
Frances
Francesca
Margot
Margerite
Thora
Nora
Lucille
Honor
Ianthe instead of Xanthe?

Polly
Harriet
Penelope
Jemima
Verity
Pearl
Felicity
Normandie
Lydia
Thelma
Ju liette

Horton · 27/02/2009 21:07

I like Jemima a lot. Normandie sounds a bit trying too hard to me.

MrsMattie · 27/02/2009 21:12

I love almost all of your names.

I think Rosamund, Christabel & Camilla (or Cammelia...I know a woman called this - beautiful) go very well with Beatrice.

I also love Rose, Cleo, Bella, Lola. Vivi is very cute, too.

You have fab taste in names.

FairLadyRantALot · 27/02/2009 22:11

Ottilie (but suddenly seems to be becoming alarmingly popular!)....don't like it....prefer octavia over that one!
Variations on Rose - Rose itself, or Rosamund, Rosalie, Rosanna, Rosie- ...Rose is lovely!
Daisy....it's a cute name
Vivi...nope, doesn't sound like a proper name
Poppy...like that one...but not sure with Beatrice
Milly -...noooooooooooo
Camilla...prefer Camille
Florence ...lovely especially with Beatrice
Lottie- ...nope
Cleo..nope
Clemmie...nope
Maggie...nope
Ella (but there are thousands...)...to many, but lovely name
Bella,,,not with beatrice, not keen anyway on it
Christabel (Bella)..nope
Dora (but now too associated with 'the Explorer'?)...def no...
Lola...lola the showgirl
Tallulah (Tallie) ?!...yep but no bit yeah but...can't decide what I think of that name, sorry
Honor...sounds like a boys name
Xanthe (too Greek?)...don't like it

my favourites right now are
Darcy
Orla
Esme
Olivia

when I was pg with my sons I had picked following girlsnames:
with ys:
Anoushka
Tatyana

with ms:
Lina (originally we had picked Melina, but was put of the name due to a medical phenomenon)

with es:
Shana

plonker · 27/02/2009 22:40

Ottilie - Lovely. I don't know any. Tillie is a cute nn too
Variations on Rose - Rose is beautiful. If you like Rose, why mess about with a lengthened variation?
Daisy - Cute
Vivi - Not keen but I do like Vivienne
Poppy - Really don't like
Milly - Love Millie, its a great name. The spelling 'Milly' makes me think that its a nn for something else though.
Camilla - Prefer Camille
Florence - Lovely
Lottie - Don't like this, but Charlotte is nice.
Cleo - Reminds me too much of H20
Clemmie - No, don't like.
Maggie - Love this, v cute!
Ella (but there are thousands...) - There are thousands of Ella's because its such a lovely name. My friends dd is Eloise and is called Ella has a nn ...could that work for you?
Bella - Tweenies
Christabel (Bella) - really don't like
Dora (but now too associated with 'the Explorer'?) - Yup, I'm afraid I hear Dora, I think exporer ...
Lola - showgirl
Tallulah (Tallie) - Don't like this. At All.
Honor - Hmmm, not sure
Xanthe (too Greek?) - Don't like this

My favourites from your list are:
Millie
Ella
Rose
Ottilie
Maggie
Florence

RachieB · 27/02/2009 22:58

I like Cleo and Honor best

rusmum · 27/02/2009 23:33

i have a DD 6 months called Rose Ellyn - love
Otherwise= like vivienne- evelyn and olive!

Beesmummy · 28/02/2009 00:33

Wow, go away for supper and have all these brilliant messages to read just before bed, hurrah, thank you!
Flowermum, love Imo, Imogen too, Wheelybug, I was thinking of Genevieve maybe for Vivi, I agree Vivi on its own is too much of a nn, but I am not sure about Vivienne. Maybe Vivyan which is Cornish spelling? (DH is Cornish). Hedgiemum - are you me in disguise? All your names are all my names... and yes I was thinking Clemency maybe for Clemmie, rather than Clementine which sounds a bit orangey... I also love Iris and DH suggested Celeste tonight at supper! (PS LOVED the chalet school books - maybe Marylou?! Was Carlotta Chalet School, or was that St Clare's? - like Lotta from Carlotta too!)
Heated, Merry is a family name, from Merelina though, which is a bit of an odd one. I also keep thinking about Cesca (Francesca).
Isadora is great - and includes my Dora but pretties it up a bit.
Flora I love, but DH had an ex and he isn't keen.
Because he is Cornish we looked at Cornish names and wondered about Demelza (Dilly, Daisy, etc).
Jocie? from Jocelyn? Family name... can't quite hear it as anything but a family name but thought I would chuck it in the pot.
Vivi I would pronounce Vivvy I think - I met a Greek girl called Vivi (she said it sort of half way between VeeVee and Vivvy if you can imagine that) and it just sounded such an alive name, I really fell for it.
I love the idea Magdalene for Maggie and Lula is sweet too instead of Lola.
A really left field name would be Perpetua (family catholic weird name) nickname Pepper (but would they get called Peppa Pig?!).
Frazzled, my boys names are family names so perhaps not much help to you, but Wilfred (Wilf), Johnny (or maybe Jonty, but probably Johnny) and maybe Hugo, Laurie (Laurence - dh likes) or Jago (Cornish for James but my family hate it).
Thank you everyone, keep them coming if you aren't too bored of this thread because I am really getting something out of it!

Adore Nell, wanted it from Eleanor (my grandmother) but dh not at all keen, sigh.
Theodora is gorgeous, a friend has Theodora and Anastasia and they are such sweet little girls.
My beloved cousin (100 years old as of five days ago!) is called Dorothy and she was called Dodo, which is kind of sweet!
Nancy was what I wanted to call my daughter when I was little and reading the Swallows and Amazons books...

Hedgiemum I might have to add Gigi to my list if you don't mind - especially because I have seen the film about a billion times - although definitely won't be calling her Leslie after Leslie Caron!!!!

What about Nell from Helen?

FairLadyRantALot · 28/02/2009 18:23

OH Nell is a beautyful name in it's own right, I think

And Magdalena is a beautyful name, imo...

hedgiemum · 01/03/2009 10:08

Hi Beesmummy - same taste in names AND children's fiction...! I can't wait for Gigi (6) to get into S&A's, Chalet School, and all the rest... she's only made it as far as Enid Blyton and Roald Dahl so far...
I'm glad you like Gigi, and Vivi is also cute for Genevieve. The only other one I know of is shortened to Evie.
A few more suggestions which made my long-lists at various points... (for some reason, any name I've seriously considered for a previous baby I haven't wanted to consider for the next, I like coming up with fresh options...)

Evangeline - Evie. Gigi has a friend she's fallen out with called Evie so she won't let me short list that one. I've been playing around with Angel/Angie type nn's but can't find anything that doesn't sound ridiculously twee. (even for me!)
Also Emmanuelle - I know about the 70's porn connotations, but it has such a beautiful meaning I'd love to redeem it! But have 2 nieces called Ellie already, so not sure about nn's.
Massively keen on Violet or Violette - which would be alternates for Vivi.

From Chalet School(!) - yes there was a Carlotta, she ran away from somewhere to go there I think. Always loved Josette, either on own or as nn for Josepehine. Suggested this to an aunt when I was 12, and she used it for my cousin - who I had as a bridesmaid because of that connection!

Of your other ideas; LOVE Dorothy/Dorothea because of BEST writer ever in history of world, Dorothy Dunnett. You could nn to Dora?!

tiggerlovestobounce · 01/03/2009 10:17

Of your choices I like Poppy, Milly, Ella, Xanthe.

Poppy and Millie are maybe names that are lovely on a little girl, but not so good for an adult?

I've just read your other post, and I like Perpetua too.

Beesmummy · 02/03/2009 21:24

don't know Dorothy Dunnett and going to have to find her books asap!!! Have to think of nn's though with a name like Dorothy/Dorothea and we were worried Dora might have Explorer connotations to her generation, worried Dodo might be 'dead as a' and that Dodie (makes me think of writer Dodie Smith) might remind people of Dodi Fayed...!

So many names I love, but am not keen on the nicknames, eg Cassandra from I Capture the Castle, but not keen on Sandra or Cassie for some reason. etc etc.

CDMforever · 02/03/2009 21:32

I don't think anyone has mentioned Arabella. When I was pg with dd I loved the name Isabella but that name is quite popular and we have a close friend with an Isabelle. So when I discovered Arabella it was love at first sight!! DH not initially keen but wore him down eventually. DD's full name is Arabella Rose Cicely. She's now 6 months old and her name sometimes gets shortened to Bella and Arabou. I still LOVE the name and have still never heard of another child or adult with the same name - apart from Arabella Weir.

you didn't fancy Eugenie then?

Ariadne

EyeballsintheSky · 02/03/2009 21:44

You can't have Evangeline, well, you can but Beatrice and Evangeline were the sisters in the house of elliot

Go for Demelza, I'd love a Demelza but am in no way Cornish

That is like an entire baby name book right there!

llareggub · 05/03/2009 19:22

If you're on a Chalet School bent, I always liked Richenda.

I'm also an Arabella fan, and would have had it for this baby but looks like it's another boy.

Juwesm · 05/03/2009 19:23

What about Vivica fir Vivi - the only 'real' one I know of is Vivica Fox.

SalBySea · 05/03/2009 19:25

Ottilie (but suddenly seems to be becoming alarmingly popular!)
Variations on Rose - Rose itself, or Rosamund, Rosalie, Rosanna, Rosie
Daisy
Vivi Poppy Milly
Camilla (too royal now? always liked it because of Camellias)
Florence
Lottie Cleo Clemmie Maggie Ella (but there are thousands...)
Bella
Christabel (Bella)
Dora (but now too associated with 'the Explorer'?)
Lola
Tallulah (Tallie) ?!
Honor
Xanthe (too Greek?)

all the bold ones are shortened pet names IMO. I like some of them but only as pet names if the person has the full version for "grown up" purposes.

Would you be giving them the options of the long versions too? Nice as they sound for a little girl, I cant imagine getting a bollocking from a Clemmie or a Lola - Clemmie or Lola would never be the boss! Dolores or Clementine I could take seriously as an adult.

SalBySea · 05/03/2009 19:27

dunno why it highlighted Poppy?
