Alfie - OR - Alfred ???

jen992 · 25/02/2009 19:22

We would like to call our DS Alfie but don't know whether to 'register' him as Alfie or Alfred. The reasons being:

  1. Alfie can only shortened to alfie or Alf
  2. Alfred can be Alfie, Alf, Fred or Freddie.

But is it cruel making a boy/man write his full name on forms etc as 'Alfred'? does it sound too old-man-ish??

Opinions please....

go for Alfred.

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 25/02/2009 19:38

Go for Alfred - when he's older he may enjoy being able to choose which name or nickname he wants to be known by.

Alfie every time

Leo9 · 25/02/2009 20:24

Alfie as a full name is v chavvy so I'd go for Alfred. I don't actually think it's old-man-ish, it's an attractive name IMO. I think it's nice as you say to have the possibility of different nicknames for him, Alfie or Freddie etc.

BarcodeZebra · 25/02/2009 20:30

Alfie is not a real name. It's short for Alfred.

I don't get this kind of thing on here at all....

Pinkchampagne · 25/02/2009 20:43

Both lovely names. I have a little boy with the name which is apparently "v chavvy", but we love the name & it suits him perfectly. Maybe go for Alfred if you like it. I wasn't sure when DS was born, but now he is often referred to as Alfred, even though he is just an Alfie, so we maybe should have gone for it!

scardey · 25/02/2009 20:46

Oh dear Barcode Zebra, you wont approve of my Ben, Kit, Teddy or Davy then!

BarcodeZebra · 25/02/2009 21:46

It's just my opinion and I don't matter!

Bet they're lovely kids.

jellybeans · 25/02/2009 21:47

I much prefer just Alfie and I know 2 of them (not 'Chavs' either!). Alfred too old man ish. Nothing wrong with shorter versions of names at all, they are often nicer. Why put something on the birth cert which you will never use. My DS has a short name. Many shortened versions become names in their own right, such as Jack, Jake etc.

Fillyjonk · 26/02/2009 19:37

oh fgs at this "chav" business

princess tiaamii type names aside (sp, prob) aside, honestly, names per se aren't "chavvy". Names just aren't that important imo.

Fillyjonk · 26/02/2009 19:37

ps I prefer Alfred. He can also be Al, Allie etc.

PuppyMonkey · 26/02/2009 19:40

Alfie is a nice name. Alfred is horrid and your ds would never use it so why waste everyone's time!??

I don't get this kind of thing on here at all.... either.

jen992 · 27/02/2009 09:37

"I don't get this kind of thing on here at all.... either."

So don't comment then! ... why waste your time if you're not interested? it's only a bit of 'fun'!

Thanks to everyone tho for their opinions.

i dont like either

call him Freddie

annasmami · 27/02/2009 12:47

Definately Alfred in my opinion. Alfie sounds 'cutesy' and quite trendy. It is fine for a little boy, but not suitable for a man. But of course that's just my opinion (but you did ask ).

othersideofchannel · 27/02/2009 16:22

Alfie is not a real name - it is a short form for Alfred.

I don't particularly like Alfred, so wouldn't use Alfie/Alfred personally.

How about Frederick?

QuantitativeMeasure · 27/02/2009 16:36

I have an Alfie.

We are not 'chavs'

suwoo · 27/02/2009 16:42

Alfie is number 4 in the 'popularity stakes' I believe.

link It may end up being one of those 4 in a class names, if that doesn't bother you then go for it. Best of luck.

Ineedsomesleep · 27/02/2009 17:31

Not keen on Alfie, but then I never did like Eastenders much.

Alfie is very, very popular here too.

jellybeans · 27/02/2009 17:38

'It is fine for a little boy, but not suitable for a man.'
But it probably will be in 20 years when loads of men are called Alfie.
'Alfie is not a real name - it is a short form for Alfred.'
I see it as a real name, it's subjective. Loads of shortened names become names in their own right and who says what a 'real name' is anyway!

othersideofchannel · 27/02/2009 17:59

Yes, it is subjective. I happen to find names ending in -ie 'cute' and suitable for children and not for adults.

And by giving a child a full version of a name, it gives MORE options including Alfie.

PuddingChops · 27/02/2009 18:13

How is Alfie not suitable for an old man. It is an old mans name and there are lots of old Alfies around.
