Alfie - OR - Alfred ???

We would like to call our DS Alfie but don't know whether to 'register' him as Alfie or Alfred. The reasons being:

  1. Alfie can only shortened to alfie or Alf
  2. Alfred can be Alfie, Alf, Fred or Freddie.

But is it cruel making a boy/man write his full name on forms etc as 'Alfred'? does it sound too old-man-ish??

Opinions please....

Alfie can be shortened to 'Al' which IMO is fine for an older man.

Names ending in 'ie' sounding cute and suitable for kids, not adults is silly. Alot of names end in a 'y' which obviously gives the same pronunciation. Like JennY, TonY, HarrY or even names ending in 'ie' are ok for older people, like Charlie!!

Suppose it's all a matter of opinion and also depends where people live and what names are common/popular in a particular area. My mum works in a primary school and there is only one Alfie (so far!) in the entire school!... but that could be very different in 4 years time!!

Each to their own I say!!
