What do you think of Genevieve Laura? How popular are Laura and Genevieve? Would Laura Genevieve sound better?

Other names I love are Lucinda, Henrietta, Antonia, Arabella, Rose,Charlotte, Clementine - they do all seem quite frilly and I wondered if Genevieve Laura is smarter, but also still feminine.

I think both names are beautiful, classic, feminine. But (and it's a big one) - Genevieve is going to be called Genny/Gen eventually, even if you try very hard to stop it. Do you like those nicknames? Important, because they absolutely will get used all the time!

Of your other names - I adore Rose and think Antonia is very dignified.

LuciaRose · 25/02/2009 10:42

I see what you mean about the nickname Genny. I was thinking that Evie might be a pretty nickname?

I have this problem with all my favourite names - I worry that Lucinda would get Cindy, or Antonia would get Toe, Charlotte would get Charlie. I'm not too keen on Bella, Hettie or Clemmie either! Any better suggestions out there?

Antonia is fantastic - pretty, dignified, and not greatly used.

Any name at all can get a bad nickname. I think Antonia would be "Tony" which is quite sweet for a girl.
Estella?
Claudia?
Ottilie?

SoupDragon · 25/02/2009 10:46

How are you pronouncing it to get Evie or Gen/Genny as a shortening? I'm with Reality on the pronunciation.

duchesse · 25/02/2009 10:46

I hate with a passion the English way of pronouncing this name!! It sounds very affected (Jennaveev) and 1950s to me (not the name itself, which is lovely, but the pronunciation).

VictorianSqualor · 25/02/2009 10:46

Please don't use Genevieve.
She'll hate you. I know a Genevieve and she HATES it. I only found out her real name from her daughter as even on the school governor list she is known by a completely different nickname.

SoupDragon · 25/02/2009 10:47

Ugh - don't pronounce it "Gennaveeve"!

MrsMattie · 25/02/2009 10:48

I know all names get shortened sometimes, but really - how many Genevieves or Jennifers do you know? Nope, always Jenny/Jen.

How about Virginia? Surely due a revival? Brings to mind baggy shorts, picnics, adventures and lashings of ginger beer in a more gentle age. Aah me...

I am a Genevieve and love my name. The trouble is nobody has ever called me it, always shortened to Genny.

LuciaRose · 25/02/2009 10:55

Thank you for all your replies. It seems like she really would get called Gen or Genny. What about Laura? I don't hear many little girls getting called Laura any more, but does it still sound a bit seventies and dated? I know quite a few women in their 30s called Laura.

I know a Laura who is 8!

Would you go for the French pronunciation of Genevieve?

LuciaRose · 25/02/2009 10:59

Sorry, forgot to answer that bit - I pronounce it Jen-a-veev - the English way. I do know about the French pronunciation, which I quite like, but I've only ever heard people over here use the English pronunciation.

I know a Genevieve who is called Genevieve. It is a beautiful name and no more complicated than many other names.

bigTillyMint · 25/02/2009 11:03

Yes, I guess it would be open to alot of mispronunciation.

And I guess if you chose the French pronunciation, people might be a bit if you are not French.

VictorianSqualor · 25/02/2009 11:04

I like Laura, a lot.

mcfee · 25/02/2009 11:04

My DD is called Laura and she is 4!

MrsMattie · 25/02/2009 11:09

I know a few Laura's but all grown women. Oh, it's a lovely name, though. Bound to get more popular.

dinkymum · 25/02/2009 11:44

I prefer Genevieve I think hth x

Marne · 25/02/2009 11:46

I don't like it (sorry), its a long name, just think about when they need to learn to write it

I like Laura.
