Lysander?

It has just occurred to me that my 2 DD's names are mentioned in Jilly Cooper novels and am looking for a name for impending DS. So in that vein I am thinking of perhaps Lysander? Any thoughts? (We are otherwise thinking Scottish names - see Campbell thread).
Although, aha.....Rupert CAMPBELL-black, hadn't thought of that before. Anyway, Lysander anyone?

Hmmm. Sounds a little bit precious to me. Sorry.

MrsMattie · 25/02/2009 10:16

Ponce.

FlyMeToDunoon · 25/02/2009 10:16

Just posted on your other thread.
Lysander is fabulous!

Lovely name, it would be a brave choice though I think and is bound to be shortened to Andy, or Anders - Anders is OK.

I like Campbell too. I have a scottish relative called Anderson (first name) which I think is great if it works with your surname.

frazzledoldbag · 25/02/2009 10:18

Hmmmm. Knobby isn't quite what I'm hoping for for little DS.

Very knobby. What about Caliban for a brave choice?

frazzledoldbag · 25/02/2009 10:20

Caliban makes me think Taliban. and that's surely not good.

You've read the Tempest right?

spicemonster · 25/02/2009 10:27

I think it's quite a hard name to live down. I love Campbell though if that's any help?

choccyp1g · 25/02/2009 10:28

Shortened to Lice?

muffle · 25/02/2009 10:31

I love wacky names and I actually think Lysander is a good choice because of the shortening possibilities. If as he grows up he wants to have a stand-out name, he can used Lysander - if he wants to be Anders, or the totally normal Andy, he can. We named DS on those principles - very unusual name that can be shortened to something very common. I'd go for it if you like it.

shonaspurtle · 25/02/2009 10:33

See, I think in Scotland Lysander would inevitably get shortened to Sandy and you said you didn't like that.

BlameItOnTheBogey · 25/02/2009 10:36

I know a Lysander and he is a knob. Sorry.

frazzledoldbag · 25/02/2009 10:36

Sandy was our chihuahua. And no. Don't really want a son called that and it's one of the obvious shortenings. Do you think we could call him Lysander and use Lex for short? I like Lex.

OP posts:
MrsSeanBean · 25/02/2009 10:36

I like it, but the first think which sprung to mind was Puck! I think maybe for second name ... maybe...

FlyMeToDunoon · 25/02/2009 10:37

I don't think it would get shortened to sandy as it is pronounced much more z than s
So it might get shortened to Zander which I think is nice too.

frazzledoldbag · 25/02/2009 10:38

Oh god, reading these comments the outstanding ones seem to be
'knobby'
'knob'
'brave'
'precious'
and 'ponce'
none of which are particuarly desirable IMO.

Oh well. Back to the drawing board.

I think it's a fantastic name. I've only every known one, though, and he was VERY posh. that might or might not be something that puts you off!

shonaspurtle · 25/02/2009 10:41

You could, you could call him anything you like as a nickname (obv!) but people would probably assume his name is Alexander with Lex.

I've got a friend with a ds called Alexander (I love that name) who was adamant that he wouldn't be a Sandy...two years later, guess what. I do like Sandy though.

Quite a lot of older men in Scotland named Alexander get called Alistair (my great uncle for one). I think it's the gaelic version and presumably to distinguish them from other Alecs in the family, Scottish families traditionally being very unoriginal with names (lots of naming after family members as a matter of course).

MorocconOil · 25/02/2009 10:41

I was in a cafe yesterday and there was a mum and toddler named Lysander on the next table. I was quite shocked when I realised his name, and it sounded really odd when she kept saying ' Noooo, Lysander the man does not want you to bang on the window. Noooo Lysander, nooo!'

FlyMeToDunoon · 25/02/2009 10:42

Lex-Luthor
Did you see my last post on the campbell thread. It is particularly relevant to Mrsseanbean

Still whistling now.....

Niecie · 25/02/2009 10:44

I really like it. A bit obscure but on the right side of weird.

I wouldn't have said it was that posh as it is so unusal.

shonaspurtle · 25/02/2009 10:44

Thinking about it, I really like Hamish from your original list. I had it filed away as a name for a future ds when I realised it would sound ludicrous with our surname - dammit!

frazzledoldbag · 25/02/2009 10:46

Yes fly I just did thank you.
Hercules, now there's a name to consider..............
