Lysander?

It has just occurred to me that my 2 DD's names are mentioned in Jilly Cooper novels and am looking for a name for impending DS. So in that vein I am thinking of perhaps Lysander? Any thoughts? (We are otherwise thinking Scottish names - see Campbell thread).
Although, aha.....Rupert CAMPBELL-black, hadn't thought of that before. Anyway, Lysander anyone?

Alsander is lovely but he will spend his whole life correcting people. That is a very boring thing to have to do!

tearinghairout · 27/02/2009 12:25

I love Lysander. If you decide to call him Lex, no doubt it'll stick. My ds has a unique nickname that I made up when she was tiny and all her friends call her that!

frazzledoldbag · 27/02/2009 13:41

seeker I agree I do like Alsander, but people will probably just think I've mispronounced Alexander and I'd get annoyed. I already have problems with our surname!

a Lysander I knew was called Lice for the duration of high school.

frazzledoldbag · 27/02/2009 13:49

guadalupe - oh no, that's awful

I don't remember thinking it was awful at the time though. He was just called lice for short, not sure I ever thought of it as actual lice until now. I suppose it is a bit unfortunate but I don't recall him particularly being tormented about it. He might say differently of course.

My mum is called LysandRA

I had Lysander on my list during first pregnancy - for Shakespeare reasons rather than Jilly Cooper reasons you understand [literary snob emoticon] .

But when I looked at my list after giving birth I decided it must surely have been a heavy dose of pregnancy hormones which made me think it was a suitable name for a real child. It is a nice sounding name - it's just way too much for a toddler in the playground.

If you like Jilly Cooper names go for Rupert. It's lovely. Very cute on a toddler and works for an adult too.

frazzledoldbag · 04/03/2009 11:51

lulu - don't particularly want a 'jilly cooper' name! I just quite like Lysander - but fear he would get Sandy which I'm not keen on.

I am a bit worried that looking at my short list it is heavily hormonal and in the cold light of (non-pregnant) day I'd look at it and go 'oh god no'.
(and although I like Rupert, DH hates it)
but Campbell interestingly is still in the running.

Back to the drawing board then..............

I like Lysander, but it might not be that practical. If you like the L names, my daughter has a Lytton and a Lexi in her class.

frazzledoldbag · 04/03/2009 12:05

We had thought of Alexander, shortened to Lex....
not keen on Lytton though thanks karenG

I always like this name - Shakespeare names aer always good (DD has one). However, DH not so keen ESPECIALLY as it is also in a Jilly Cooper novel too!!

HeyMa · 04/03/2009 12:23

oh fraz campbell is a mega name and i have no-one in my family with that name so tatally inbiased honest guv it suits all ages too....if you like Lex can you not just use that? short i know but there's no reason not to

HeyMa · 04/03/2009 12:24

as you can see my fingers do not work today

totally and unbiased

rabuxton · 04/03/2009 13:41

I really like the name Lysander I wouldn't associate it with knob or posh just a great name. Lex would work, but you won't have a say in how other kids shorten it. It could be Zan, which sounds like a warrior.

LuLuBai · 04/03/2009 13:48

Frazzledoldbag the pregnancy hormones play havoc with the name choices don't they.

I also really, really tried to get DH to warm to Peregrine and Merlin last time (I liked the idea of naming the baby after a falcon !?) . Luckily had a girl.

I think Campbell is gorgeous. Yes I have pregnancy hormones raging through my system too, but I am feeling fairly sensible today so hopefully that is good advice (shame your DH doesn't like Rupert though!)

frazzledoldbag · 04/03/2009 14:41

ooh LuLuBai now, Falcon is a good name....
I really like Campbell but also know my (not pg) SIL also really likes it (she told me this pointedly the other day) so am slightly nervous about whether it would be fair to use it.......(didn't tell her it was on my list by the way ).

fraz sod the SIL all's fair in love and baby names by time she is pg she may have gone off it and you'd have missed the chance to use it...how irritating although i'm not condoning an all out family war of course....
