What do other mums associate with these names and are they good choices?? First child a girl called Maya Jasmine. I'm half Indian so don't want a traditional English name.. Help please as it is getting close and I am not sure!!

How babout India for a girl?

For a boy, what about Otis or Cassius?

LoveMyLapTop · 16/02/2009 19:22

Dont like Rio or Sienna
a bit common

nightgardener · 16/02/2009 19:24

Like India...
Again on the long list, think we crossed it off for being a bit 'hippy'!? But I do still like it.

I thought Sienna was a spice.

nightgardener · 16/02/2009 19:26

Isn't that saffron??

And Nico? I think it goes well with Maya, but DH not sure about it...

Burned sienna? Isn't there such a thing? Maybe I'm thinking of Cinammon.

MmeLindt · 16/02/2009 19:50

Nico is much better than Rio. Rio makes me think of a big black chef in New Orleans with a golden hoop earing in one ear, stirring a pot of gamba.

Layla is nice but quite similar to Maya.

India is lovely. One of the columnists with the Sunday Times is called India and I always loved that.

nightgardener · 16/02/2009 19:56

Nico or India..
I like both of those.

Thalia?

choosyfloosy · 16/02/2009 21:31

Nico is great.

Saskia I really like - also Sasha?

jeanjeannie · 16/02/2009 21:49

Much prefer India and Nico

Not at all keen on Rio or Sienna - sounds too much like names in Heat magazine

Saskia is really lovely too

TiggyR · 16/02/2009 22:35

Rio - very downmarket - sorry.
Sienna pretty, but a bit predictable at the moment. What about Ramona, Camelia, Thalia, (pronounced Tah-lia) and Lola is nicer than Layla.

DD's name lovely - especially with the Indian influence, sounds exotic and classy.

loobylu3 · 16/02/2009 22:36

We have a Maya (actually Maia) too and I am also half Indian with a non Caucasian, non British DH. We also have the same issue about wanting something a bit unusual/ not too English, etc as well as having v different taste!
We have a DS called Lucas which is v multicultural though it has become more popular recently (as has Maya too!)
Am expecting no.3 v shortly and still haven't decided completely!
I think Sienna/ Savannah/ Rio are no where near as lovely and classic as Maya and are too trendy/ celeby for my taste.
India is quite nice.
Other names that might suit you (some are on our shortlist):
Leela/ Layla/ Leila
Livia
Celeste
Sylvie
Elodie
Cassia
Elina/ Eliana
Ariadne
Marissa
Allegra

Cassius
Caspar
Hugo (multicultural)
Lucien/ Lucian
boys are hard!!

TiggyR · 16/02/2009 22:38

Oops, someone already said Thalia - sorry. It is lovely though. It was very high on my list for my DS who was born nearly ten years ago. So ahead of my time!

TiggyR · 16/02/2009 22:40

Lucien is lovely. Also Fabien, Xavier and Sebastian.

tigerdriver · 16/02/2009 22:43

Nico and Saskia - lovely

Rio - no no no

Sienna - not really

TiggyR · 16/02/2009 22:44

Xavier is pronounced Zav-ee-ay btw, not
Zave-ee-er. Sorry if I'm teaching Grnadmother to suck eggs! Just reminded me, I always loved Xanthe (Zanthee) Lois, Elsa and Domini for a girl. Got three boys so I never used any of them!

AnnVan · 16/02/2009 23:47

I know a Sienna - it's an okay name just don't (as her mum does) shorten it to Si Si! that is just awful imo
Rio - I don't think Duran Duran, I think Ferdinand.

AnnVan · 16/02/2009 23:48

nkf burnt sienna is a colour.

Love Rio - I didn't have the guts to use it so please keep it on the list!! Nico and Layla nice but over used these days. Friend of mine has 18 month old who is one of three nicos in his class.

I don't like India if you are actually Indian, seems weird. It's like hi my name is France. Feel the same way about Asia.

Don't like either I'm afraid - and think there will be a glut of both after Rio Ferdinand and Sienna Miller being prominent.
Neither are good role models either so maybe find a name with a more positive association?
