Hi all

We decided on the name Aoife (Ee-fe) at my 20 week scan when we found out we were having a girl, but now at 32 weeks I'm wondering if its a nice name or not (think this is also pregnancy brain and indecision).

DH refers to baby as Aoife and so think he will find it really hard if I say I don't like it anymore...anyone have any thoughts?

It's a lovely name, if you like Irish names what about Saoirse (seer sha)? It's my favourite at the moment. Or Clodagh I like that one too. Good luck

ramonaquimby · 29/01/2009 20:22

I think it's Ee fa, not Ee fe

2pt4kids · 29/01/2009 20:23

Oh I love Aoife. I say it Ee fa too

MrsMattie · 29/01/2009 20:24

It's Ee-fa.

Gorgeous name.

My mum nearly called my sister it 30 years ago, and I almost called my daughter Aoife (born 10 wks ago - only DH wasnt as keen as me).

A lovely, strong, feminine Irish name.

Are you Irish?

Its eef faa and its lovely name

newmumtobe84 · 29/01/2009 20:27

Sorry, meant Ee fa. I'm Irish, DH is Ghanaian and so baby will have Ghanaian surname and also "pet Ghana name" which will be based on the day of the week she is born (each day as a certain girl's and boy's name!) so think we are balancing it out. Thanks for making me feel better - think its just pregnancy panic!!

I love Effie too - thats Greek isnt it?

eekamoose · 29/01/2009 20:28

I think it is the most beautiful girls name in the world. But you can only use it if you are Irish.

AnnieAreYouOkAreYouOkAnnie · 29/01/2009 20:29

Beautiful name, I wanted it for my DD, but DH couldn't spell it... couldn't even learn...
Stick with it, it's beautiful. Eee-faa.

eekamoose · 29/01/2009 20:29

Cross posts! See that you are Irish. Am .

DumbledoresGirl · 29/01/2009 20:30

The point is though surely that you are having doubts about the name. If you are not convinced by the end of this thread that you like the name, say something to your dh. You still have time to change the name to something else and you won't be the first person to call the bump one thing and the baby another (speaking as someone who does regret the name I chose for my dd )

DumbledoresGirl · 29/01/2009 20:31

Oops sorry, my advice seems to be misplaced now. Glad you are happy with your choice

potoftea · 29/01/2009 20:33

It's my 2nd favorite girl's name, and as I only have one dd I'm sad that I never got to use it. It's a beautiful name.

There's a scene in the Vicar of Dibley when Dawn French's character meets an Aoife, and asks how it's spelt. When she hears then she makes some joke about "not leaving a vowel for anyone else". I'd never realised before that, how unusual it is that it's nearly all vowels.

pushchair · 29/01/2009 20:35

I wanted to call my first daughter this. I think it is lovely.

PlumBumMum · 29/01/2009 20:40

Sorry what I mean't was I live in NI and have seen many mnetters who live in Ireland, any threads I read they all seem to live in england

PlumBumMum · 29/01/2009 20:52

*haven't seen

eekamoose · 29/01/2009 21:21

No Plumbum, I'm not Irish. That's why I am envious of OP - she can give her dd the wonderful name Aoife and its ok cos she is Irish.

Went to Ireland for my honeymoon though (Dublin and Galway). Have also spent quite a bit of time in Belfast as my first serious boyfriend was from Belfast.

I do love Ireland.

There are quite a lot of Mumsnetters who are Irish - they all started chatting to each other on a thread I was on quite recently. Sorry but I can't remember which one.

pushchair · 29/01/2009 21:29

i disagree you have to be irish to call your child an Irish name. I am Scottish and have an Irish name. i worked as a teacher and came across lots of children with Irish names who did not have Irish parents.

RobertPattinsonComeToMomma · 29/01/2009 21:31

I'm Irish and I love Aoife!

Lmccrean · 29/01/2009 21:32

Plum - Im in NI just outside belfast

cikecaka · 29/01/2009 21:50

I'm Irish, absolutely love the name but my cousin got in before me ended up calling dd2 Caoimhe, kee va, cause it sounded very like it!!
