Not Mango or Princess Tiaami before anyone thinks they are being really witty!

I am mixed race dh is white, so our child would look olive skined (like ds) or very possibly like a pale black/mixed raced person. Just thought i'd get that in before anyone flames me! Telling me how awful it is to inflict such a name on a typical British looking child.

My name is arabic in origin. Ds has a very british biblical name and i would like a more unusual name if i were to have a girl.

Ariana is adorable. Love it!

claireybrations · 26/01/2009 19:08

DD is Caiela

Have friends with:
Leilani
Ellani (no they don't know each other!)
Noni
Tiane
Jada
Riva
Jaiya

um...I think that's about it for the more exotic names

RachieB · 26/01/2009 19:15

I like Tiana and Talia

LunarSea · 26/01/2009 19:20

I cam across an Apollonia the other day - never heard of that before.

Yasmin is less common at the moment than Jasmine - and has Arabic origns too which might fit well with your background. Leila's Arabic too I think (and spelled differntly to the song if that's an issue).

LittleMissBliss · 26/01/2009 19:30

claireybrations how do you pronounce your daughters name?

She is gorgeous, what beautiful eyelashes. If i were to have a girl i'd love her to have hair like your daughters. I've come to terms with my curly hair which i hated as a child, its now past my shoulders but i have to relax it to tame it into ringlets.

Your son is also a sweetie!

Well we pronounce it Ky-Ella, it is apparently a derivative of Caia (to rejoice) so we kind of went with that pronunciation and stuck el in the middle iyswim. I have heard of it being pronounced Kyla though so not sure which is right! I prefer our way

claireybrations · 26/01/2009 19:43

Oh and thanks
I do love her hair when it is just washed and combed and looking pretty but when she has slept on it or been out in the wind etc and it is a big matted mess I am not so keen!

LittleMissBliss · 26/01/2009 19:45

Lunarsea i do prefer that spelling. I do think it's a beautiful name and have never heard of the song, but lots of people (well mumsnetters) associate it with the song.

I'm not keen on Apollonia

Ariana is my favourite.

I really liked Amelie and Amelia during my last pregnancy but they are ever so popular now. So Ariana is perfect.

My DH and I are expecting DC4 in a few weeks and we'd decided on the name Kalila for a girl which we absolutely loved. We wanted something a little 'ethnic/arbic' as we are currently living in the Middle East. It means 'beloved, sweetheart' in arabic. According to our scan however we won't be using it so hope someone else likes it.

Layla (the night/born at night) also really nice but apparently more common now after Eric Clapton's song.

Jamila (beautiful in arabic) is another nice one

Buda · 27/01/2009 07:30

A friend here has an Eliana which is pretty and I think a bit exotic.

LuLuBai · 27/01/2009 08:41

I love Leila. The Eric Clapton song was ages ago and shouldn't put you off.

The one Marni I know is short for Mariana (apparently her older brother couldn't say Mariana so it became Marni).

I quite like Amaryllis for a girl born in winter (the flower is like an explosion in mid winter) but no child of mine is likely to look exotic enough to carry it off

Also like Eulalia (Lali or Lia for short), Yolanda and Graciela if you are looking for Spanish sounding names.

lillypie · 27/01/2009 08:49

My granddaughter is called Saiya,my son is mixed race and her mother is Hindu

MrsMattie · 27/01/2009 08:55

Graciela / Graziela is lovely.

I also know a Jamila (Jammi for short) - lovely name.

Lila / Lyla as an alternative to Leila?

Kaya / Kaia? (I liked this a lot and considered it for DD)

A friend recently named her daughter Syrai, which I thought was beautiful, too.

Cies · 27/01/2009 09:03

I agree that Graciela is lovely.

If you like Ariana, there's also the Spanish name Ariadna.

What about Araceli? It's very popular in the south of Spain.

Other Spanish names that I like off the top of my head:
Candela, Blanca, Sabela, Lucia, Carlota, Catalina, Leonor, Elena, Alba, Elisa.

Estrella (Eh-stray-ah)? Spanish for star. I liked a lot, but didn't feel i could give my non-Spanish baby such a Spanish name (it's also the name of a beer in Spain, too! But still very pretty, I think...)

Other Spanish women / girls I know:

Calida
Leya (Lay-ah)
Marisol
Sierra
Marisa

There is also a Sicilian woman I used to go to M&T group with who's (mixed race) daughter was called Santina.

LittleBoSheep · 27/01/2009 09:50

How about Iman?

DS knows a Natalia, and a Maia (Maya), I also like Lily

this site is useful as you can search by gender and origin.

Xavielli · 27/01/2009 10:13

Ariana is also very nice.
