Would people expect you to be welsh?

Do you like it?

People might expect you to be a Tolkein fan

Cryptoprocta · 14/01/2009 17:03

Maybe, but people don't expect a Rhiannon to be Welsh anymore.

When I saw this in the thread list, my immediate thought was 'how beautiful'. Might have to add this one to my 'in the future' list

Usthree · 14/01/2009 17:07

I think its really pretty as well, I am a LOTR fan as well

I love it, but DH is against it because he said it's not a real name and that tolkein made it up. Whatever!

GooseyLoosey · 14/01/2009 17:10

My immediate thought was LOTR.

Usthree · 14/01/2009 17:12

I don't mind people thinking LOTR when they hear it, most names will always trigger an association with something.

Do you like it?

beanieb · 14/01/2009 17:12

how would you be pronouncing it?

Usthree · 14/01/2009 17:14

Not sure how to write it, if you write them down I'll know which one I mean

Erwin?

NorktasticNinja · 14/01/2009 17:16

(not as pronunciation option, but as alternative...)

Usthree · 14/01/2009 17:16

No with an Ar instead of an Er

Arwen is nice, i also like Eowyn, the red head maiden from lotr

Tolken thought up some beautiful names for his lotr characters, it inspired my ds2 name, which is actually Irish, but very elfish/lotr sounding

I think it's pretty - and nothing wrong with sounding welsh

VinegarTits · 14/01/2009 17:22

Arwen is pronounced r-when
Eowyn is pronounced a-o-win

Me thinks

MrsSeanBean · 14/01/2009 17:24

I don't like it, sorry. And yes my first impression was 'Welsh name'... but don't let that stop you.

Usthree · 14/01/2009 17:25

Nothing wrong with sound welsh at all, I just wondered if it was such a traditonal welsh name that it would be a bit on someone that wasnt welsh

It's the name of the weird caretaker on the Suite life of Zac and Cody on the disney channel (watched by most 10-12 yo's I know and therefore me )

Apart from that it's nice esp if you are Welsh.

SoMuchToBits · 14/01/2009 17:27

Arwen is a Celtic name. Around long before Tolkien. I like it. I suppose people might expect you to be Welsh, but then the 3 children next door all have Irish names, and the Mum is Scottish and the dad half English half German. I also know a Rhiannon and Evan who aren't at all Welsh.

CandleQueen · 14/01/2009 17:28

First thought - LOTR
Second thought - A cat name

beanieb · 14/01/2009 17:31

yes, vinagartits is correct. R-When, with the emphasis on the WEN.

I knew an Arwen at school (her brother was Merlin!).
I thought it was pretty actually.

LiffeyKidman · 14/01/2009 17:50

Arwen LOTR
Olwen Welsh

Is that right?

Prefer Olwen tbh.
