Would people expect you to be welsh?

Do you like it?

LOTR

RachieB · 14/01/2009 18:20

tis ok but prefer Anwen

siriusmew · 14/01/2009 18:23

Love it!!!!!! Also like Sorcha. Which is celtic for "brightness". Have two ds so my lovingly picked girls names have just been languishing in my head!!!!!

Luxmum · 15/01/2009 10:24

Just lovely, I have it on my secret names list. As is Eowyn, who at least had a bit of character to herself. Arwen in LOTR doesnt really DO much. Other than being beautiful.

OneLieIn · 15/01/2009 10:30

Love it, love most welsh names

SaltireOShanter · 15/01/2009 10:33

sirius - like me, I had lots of lovely girls name picked out, but have 2 Ds, so they aren't used!

Kotek · 15/01/2009 14:01

Very nice and in this day and age, I think people won't expect you to be Welsh.

Jenbot · 15/01/2009 15:19

I know an Arwen from Norway. Didn't realise it was from LOTR at all myself!

babymt · 16/01/2009 14:11

I know a baby Arwen and tbh I don't like it. Its not very feminine for a start and I just don't like it. Sorry!

thumbwitch · 16/01/2009 14:12

I do like the name, I think Awen is more Welsh than Arwen, Arwen makes me think Tolkien but that isn't a problem.

GrimmaTheNome · 16/01/2009 14:13

Lovely. easy to spell and pronounce, unusual without being weird.

tiggerlovestobounce · 16/01/2009 14:16

I think Arwen is a beautiful name. The LOTR connection was the reason that I didnt use it for any of my DDs, though I do think it is lovely.

It does sound welsh to me, but I dont think you have to be welsh to have a welsh sounding name, and the pronounciation of Arwen is fairly intuitive.

OrmIrian · 16/01/2009 14:18

Very pretty. A lovely association if you know LOTR, just a nice name if you don't. Was v tempted to call Eleanor, Elinor because of LOTR but resisted.

FatController · 16/01/2009 14:26

It's a pretty name and I would probably think it was of Welsh origin.

LaTrucha · 16/01/2009 14:27

I prefer Anwen too. By lots.

nissa · 16/01/2009 15:12

I know a baby Arwen. It sounded strange at first but I like it now. They aren't welsh but Scottish. Not that I think that matters

WowOoo · 16/01/2009 15:23

I like it but as long as it's pronounced in the Welsh way, with a strong R. Don't like it Are-wen, only ARwen.

I do like it, it's pretty but I knew an old chap called Arwyn (masculine form) and when I hear it - said fast in a Welsh accent they sound the same - I think of him!

Leo9 · 16/01/2009 20:30

It's beautiful - I love this name.

dizzydixies · 16/01/2009 20:55

DD1 was down to her name and Arwyn, dh decided once she had been delivered and I still love it to this day

YouLukaBeautiful · 16/01/2009 20:57

Nice. Arden is nice too

thumbwitch · 16/01/2009 22:14

I don't like Arden - Elizabeth Arden products immediately spring to mind, and I have just done a google search on this and pmsl at the fact that one of the top sites found was www.cheapsmells.com/ElizabethArden...

pointydog · 16/01/2009 22:17

Always preferred Pippin

Jawja · 11/05/2009 20:02

We named our daughter Arwen (5), and have always loved it. It is not hard to pronounce, but it's not common on the U.S. West Coast, which is the way I like it. Our families are from Arkansas and Mississippi, and when people in the American South hear "Arwen", they immediately think of Arliss and Arlin which are Southern, old man names. So when we say Arwen in that part of the country, they assume we're talking about a boy! I think it sounds like a faerie princess. I like to use the Welsh pronunciation affectionately. ~ Georgia
