Straw Poll - How would you pronounce the name Esme?

SweetEm · 11/01/2009 20:32

My dd is called Esme (we don't bother with the acute accent). I pronounce it "Ez-me" but she is always getting "Ez-may". I know both ways are valid pronunciations. Just wondered whether I was in the minority/majority.

Esmee is the way I say it.

rachyh85 · 27/09/2009 20:37

Es-may, my dd's beautiful name (i went for the accented version, so by french grammer i should really have put an extra e on the end - Esmee - but wanted her to be Es-may and thought that spelling would confuse!)

colditz · 27/09/2009 20:39

Ezmay

(midlands)

scattykatty · 27/09/2009 20:46

Ez-mee down in Wiltshire

sonniebonnie · 27/09/2009 20:47

I'd pronounce Esmee as Es-meh, like Renee (Zellweger).

mopsyflopsy · 27/09/2009 21:05

I'd pronounce Esmée as Es-mée, like the word fatigueé, so neither Es-may nor Es-mee.

herjazz · 27/09/2009 21:11

ez -moi in the bit of the midlands I'm from

Went to school with one. She was always Es-me.
Don't like Es-may really.

Am from South - maybe regional?

crankytwanky · 28/09/2009 22:38

Ez May, that's how my daughters is pronounced

BessieBoots · 12/05/2010 15:14

EzMay in mid-Wales. Think it's lovely both pronounciations.

PuppyMonkey · 12/05/2010 15:18

Am I on this thread already? Just seen how old it is???

It's Esmeeee for my DD. Esmay horrid imho and I will instantly correct anyone who pronounces it that way. Fortunately, only had to do that about once or twice as people here say Esmee (Notts).

PuppyMonkey · 12/05/2010 15:21

Hooray for LiffeyMermaid, I have said the same thing on about 20 similar threads and no-one ever believes me!!!!

Hedwig3 · 12/05/2010 15:34

Esmay
