Straw Poll - How would you pronounce the name Esme?

SweetEm · 11/01/2009 20:32

My dd is called Esme (we don't bother with the acute accent). I pronounce it "Ez-me" but she is always getting "Ez-may". I know both ways are valid pronunciations. Just wondered whether I was in the minority/majority.

My goddaughter is called Esmee with an acute on the first 'e'. My fiend added the second E to be sure it was pronounced es-mee. "Esme" is traditionally pronounced Ezmay.

It's one of those names that people will always say the way they want, as we have learnt!

Sorry, itchy trigger finger or something, didn't mean to post that twice!

littlelamb · 11/01/2009 23:00

Ez may

edam · 11/01/2009 23:01

LiffeyMermaid's description of a baby book lazily re-hashing a commonly held misconception is spot on, btw! I always test them with my name and can conclusively demonstrate that 8/10 are lazy-arse good for nothings taking your money without doing any research.

edam · 11/01/2009 23:06

(My RL name, obviously, not edam... )

BlackEyedDogstar · 11/01/2009 23:07

Ezmay. It's a nice name.

mrsjuan · 12/01/2009 18:03

Ez mee but have heard it both ways.

nuttygirl · 12/01/2009 18:12

Without the accent Ez-mee, with the accent Ez-may

We wanted Esme (with the accent) for dd but MIL insisted she could only say it Ez-mee so we chose something else

pamelat · 12/01/2009 19:52

Ez-me (am from the midlands) and know 2 Ez-me
I don't like Ez-may.
