Amelie or Eloise?

Yep, its me again!

Right, we had decided on Amelie and I have been testing it out on strangers (when they have asked me what names I have) and 9 out of 10 people have replied "Emily?" or just assumed I said Emily and said "very popular name" to which I have replied "No, A M E L I E!" As much as I love the name, I know this will wear thin as I already have to spell DD2's name out a lot.

Anyway, Eloise has popped into my head, again probably a name which I will have to spell but which one would you use?

Also anyone with an Eloise, how do you pronounce it?

both very pretty...but possibly wise to go for Eloise if Amelie/Emily thing is already getting to you

idobelieveinfairies · 08/01/2009 11:19

I love Eloise....there is a girl in dts class.

She pronounces is e-low-ese.

BonsoirAnna · 08/01/2009 11:21

If you write Amélie and pronounce the mé sound as MAY and the initial a clearly, Amélie will not sound like Emily.

Eloise - EL-O-EESE

Or you could spell it the French way - Héloïse.

branflake81 · 08/01/2009 11:23

I always wanted to call my DD Amelie but SIL chose it first

Not too keen on Eloise.

Karamazov · 08/01/2009 11:54

I love both. I have me DD1 is Eloise and DD2 was almost an Amelie (but it didn't go with our surname). I think both are classy, elegant names. The only difference I see between the two is that perhaps Amelie is more 'now'. It is certainly more popular (Amelie ranked 59 in 2007, Eloise was not in the top 100, and has never got higher than 75 since 1998) whereas I have been teaching a few Eloises here and there since about 2001 (and I teach secondary) so I think the name has grown in popularity slighty, but may not date as much - but then perhaps is not as trendy either? HTH

I love Amelie (dd was Amelie for the first 2 hours of her life) ... I know three, so think it's getting more common, ito people's ability to recognise/spell it.
I agree with Karamazov that Eloise has less potential to date, although I don't warm to it. (love Heloise, but possibly just as much potential for bad spelling issues )

matildax · 08/01/2009 12:15

lol @ pgwithnumber3. indecisive as ever!!!
i love them both, but think eloise is less common, as amelie has climbed really high in the popularity stakes.
eloise is really beautiful.
however, have you considered matilda????
xx

pgwithnumber3 · 08/01/2009 12:51

matildax, do you know what is funny, I am the most decisive and get on with it person I know! Baby names are just throwing me so much. WIth DD1, she had her name at 20 weeks and we never wavered from it. DD2, it took us to 38 weeks to decide though. I think it stems from me having a Grace, I absolutely love the name but never envisaged it would get SOOO popular 7 years ago. I don't want to end up with such a common name again.

I have a friend who has a Matilda so unfortunately I can't!

I think it is important to remember that anyone important in your daughter's life (family, friends, school teachers, class mates, work colleagues eventually etc) will know what her name is as soon as they have been told the first time or seen it written down the first time. Hence they will not then be calling her Emily.

If they are confused the first time, they will always know thereafter what her name is once you have/ she has told them the name.

I saw Amelie had moved up about 30 places in the scottish baby name top 100 for 2008 so must be getting more well known there too.

I know a Sara who people she meets the first time sometimes assume it is Zara, but once they have been told once what the correct name is they never forget!

Eloise is nice too. good luck!

lecohen · 08/01/2009 15:36

Hiya,

I must say that I love both names - I actually wanted Amelie for dd1 but hub said nobut we could have Emily which I refused.

Now Eloise (I would pronounce El-waz)is so pretty.

I called dd2 Elora and always get the "What? Laura?" but hey ho, nevermind!

Please update what you have chosen and good luck x

littlelyn · 08/01/2009 15:44

Eloise also gets confused with Louise if not pronounced clearly. Prefer Amelie.

NormaJeanBaker · 08/01/2009 15:46

Two Eloises in my DD school - and lovely name. Have you read the Eloise books? A very cool young lady - lot of character. Look her up!

IsaacsFabMummy · 08/01/2009 15:49

Personally I don't really like Amelie but Eloise is beautiful!

pgwithnumber3 · 08/01/2009 20:52

Thanks everyone!

NormaJean - no I haven't read the Eloise books or heard of them. I will have to look them up!

ihatemyjob · 08/01/2009 20:54

there are tons of Amelies around and my rude friend says that because of the film that its the middle class equivalent of Kylie.
