A family name on my DH's side - in case our LO turns out to be a boy - is this name terrible?? The Algernon in DHs family was always known as Algie.

I can already see the child getting called algae, but, come on - let me have it?????

DH is not convinced - will be brother (or sister) to Charles Lawrence Robson.

Charlie and Algie? Charlie and Wibur? Will?

Charlie and Algie is perfect.

You have lovely taste in names!

CountessDracula · 03/01/2009 17:06

i had a green toy beaver called algernon as a child

Bubbaluv · 03/01/2009 17:08

I'm afraid I just think of green slime.

Bubbaluv · 03/01/2009 17:11

Oh and with the surname Johnson I think of a slimey penis! Sorry

SAEJ · 03/01/2009 17:17

Flightattendant - Thanks

Bubba - at least you are honest!!! We avoided Hugh for the same reason Huge Johnson. . . .

I have the mind of a 12 year old boy when it comes to baby names- I always see the most crude/toilet level interpretation . I guess it's a gift ?

MrsMattie · 03/01/2009 17:25

God, no.

Northernlurker · 03/01/2009 17:25

Not sweet, not lovely - just BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD - imo of course

Bubbaluv · 03/01/2009 17:27

Wilbur is fab - am adding to our list. Willy Johnson is the worst he'd get as far as I can see.

Flightattendant7 · 03/01/2009 17:27

We call ours Bill

warthog · 03/01/2009 17:28

oooh no!

janeite · 03/01/2009 17:30

Ahh - sorry, FA: I see why you pulled faces at me now!

Flightattendant7 · 03/01/2009 17:34

Tis fine

I was only being daft. You should have seen some of the expressions on people's faces when we told them IRL!

'Oh that's, erm, nice...'

lol

TsarHumbug · 03/01/2009 17:35

No. But then I don't get this fashion for oap names that seem to be gaining in popularity.

BlueBumedFly · 03/01/2009 17:55

Love it!! Algie would be more my choice than Algenon but love it!

BabyBaby123 · 03/01/2009 18:59

god it's awful - sorry.

seeker · 03/01/2009 19:11

If you feel you're not brave enough to use it, then don't. It's not you who has to be rave - it's your poor ds who will have to carry this name for 80 years!

BoccaDellaVerita · 03/01/2009 19:24

I was going to say don't, because it was the name of the candidate of the Silly Party in Monty Python's general election. But that was Tarquin Fin Tim Lim Bim Whin Bim Lim Bus Stop F'tang F'tang Olè Biscuitbarrel.

So, as you were.

Diva0507 · 03/01/2009 19:35

i like alegra for girl

SAEJ · 03/01/2009 19:51

I appreciate the comments good and bad - I know you can never please everyone. I still love both names - DH is not convinced by Algie yet but he chose Wibur so we might find a compromise yet!

OP posts:
Bubbaluv · 03/01/2009 20:01

Middle name maybe?

SAEJ · 03/01/2009 20:04

Quite possibly. DH is still trying to convince me that 'Buddy' would be a great name or alternatively 'Skywalker'.

This is why I end up compiling the name lists - although I am sure some people might still prefer them to Algie!!

OP posts:
BoccaDellaVerita · 03/01/2009 20:15

I don't think Buddy or Skywalker would fit very well in Rupert or Rollo circles, although I'm not well placed to judge!

DD was at nursery with a boy called Anakin.

Bubbaluv · 03/01/2009 20:29

I think you should tell your husband that he already has a johnson he can call Buddy if he wants.
Is he serious or is he taking the piss because he thinks Algernon is ludicrous?
