What happens after 6 weeks with no name?

Just thinking. I know the time can be extended but what if when it really came to the crunch we couldn't agree on a name. Would the government issue a fine or are we assigned a name from a list - cos now I'm thinking we'll take our chances with option 2 and see what name we're given!

LaDiDaDi · 01/01/2009 20:51

Oh dear, have you and your dw still not agreed?

ScottishMummy · 01/01/2009 20:53

presumably you had @9mth pg,and this additional 6wk - what is the hold up.why cant you chose

LiffeySaysHappyNewYear · 01/01/2009 20:53

I think you just extend the period. Not sure HOW many times you can do this though. But you can definitely relax for a few weeks!! When's the 6 wks up?

Don't leave it too long though, i went to school with a girl who had 'female' on her birth cert. Made all the more hysterical by the fact that her surname was Fox. Her name was Sarah, so it always struck me as doubly hilarious that her parents thought about it for so long and came up with Sarah..

SenoraPostrophe · 01/01/2009 20:55

oh come on, you can think of a name.

whose surname is the baby having? if not both, then let the one who doesn't give the surname give the name, even if that means picking from a hat.

LiffeySaysHappyNewYear · 01/01/2009 20:56

Do you know what you should do Pinsanon, give in, and let your wife choose! the pair of you sound like stubborn fekkers. and wait 'til you can't agree about whether or not to have the MMR, you'll need some credit in the leeway bank!

Sorry, FLAME me!

I prefer YOUR taste in names, but I'm not the child's mother! You should have married me, I'd call my baby Violet in a heartbeat.

What about Georgia Emily with possible nn Gemma? That's the last suggestion I can come up with!

thisisyesterday · 01/01/2009 20:57

they will just give a name I believe. but of course you can change a baby's name at any point in their first year, so you do have extra time, so to speak.

I can';t imagine not having a name for my baby for 6 weeks though. we did umm and ahh over ds2 for a while, but after a few days i just felt really odd referring to him as just "the baby" lol

pinsanon · 01/01/2009 20:58

our indecisiveness dithering slight delay is just a minor distraction, I was just curious what happens at the end of the line.

Heated · 01/01/2009 20:59

Oh go on, let me pick the name...

...or Ilovebrucie

Tickle · 01/01/2009 20:59

don't they just register the baby as 'baby' smith or whatever..?

thisisyesterday · 01/01/2009 21:00

at heated.

pinsanon, has baby been born yet? do you know sex?

pinsanon · 01/01/2009 21:01

it's the wife who is stubborn! I'd happily let any of my choices be the name we stick with

ScottishMummy · 01/01/2009 21:02

end of line? you both look like a pair of faffs and everyone grows inceasingly exasperated

pinsanon · 01/01/2009 21:03

Yeah baby girl is 3 weeks on Sunday. Several threads about it! Both have names we like, just they're very different types of names!

Of course mine are better!

spicemonster · 01/01/2009 21:04

Stick names in hat. Pull one out. Sorted. Honestly, in a few months' time you'll be wondering why you agonised so much

pinsanon · 01/01/2009 21:06

I'm all for names in a hat, as long as one of mine comes out!

Shitemum · 01/01/2009 21:06

In Spain you only get 2 weeks after the birth to register the child and its name.
We couldn't agree on a name for DD2 and so we had a vote at DD1s birthday party 12 days after the birth. There was a shortlist of about 4 names, only the adults could vote.

Hijack:
SenoraPostrophe!!!!!! There you are!
Thought RL had swallowed you up!
We are moving back to Scotland in July, any tips for surviving the first few weeks or months of culture shock etc?
Are you still glad you moved back?

whomovedmychocolate · 01/01/2009 21:08

You get a nominal fine - I believe it's 50p. Seriously.

thisisyesterday · 01/01/2009 21:09

this is my current girls list:

Beatrice
Matilda
Mavis
Frances
Astrid
Greta
Sylvia/Sylvie
Clover
Frieda.

I'm happy for you to use any of them :P
lol

do you not have a single one that you both think is "ok"?? if so then make a deal that if you can't choose you;ll use that. as I say, you can always change it later

Heated · 01/01/2009 21:09

Having passed a camel through the eye of a needle so to speak, surely that gives your wife naming privileges?

Actually, come to think of it, how about Camille?

ILoveBrucie · 01/01/2009 21:10

I am very happy to help, surely anything you choose is better than my choices

BabyBaby123 · 01/01/2009 21:42

your wife should chose - she's the one who's gone through pregnancy and labour!! You get to chose the middle name....

bronze · 01/01/2009 21:45

Let your wife choose

and then when we're suffering the same problem tell my husband the same thing

digitalgirl · 01/01/2009 21:59

I can't believe you've gone 3 weeks without naming your daughter. We decided on a name the day after DS was born, could have ummed and ahhed for longer but it felt so unfair calling him baby boy through the first night, and like we were such crap parents we couldn't make our first decision for him. So in the end I chose, tis only fair after the immense effort I went through carrying him and pushing him into the world.

loobylu3 · 01/01/2009 22:10

Surely you both just have to compromise at this stage! It seems really unfair to leave the baby without a name for this length of time!

PlonkerAlkaseltzerInMyGlass · 01/01/2009 22:55

Your dw gave birth, that gives her naming privileges ...you give dd her middle name.

What are your shortlists?
