Baby names

On the advice of Liffey and after you slated my last girl's name, what about............

Brucie?

For a girl

Not totally a piss take, you have lots of both names, eg Leslie/Lesley, Tracie/Tracey, Charlie/Charlie etc

The more I think about it the more I think it holds promise

OK Mumsnetters, please be nicer to me than last time, what do you all think?

If you ask for folks opinions then what do you expect? Would you rather we all said it was smashing?

I am sorry you are upset but people in RL may be ruder/less sensitive if you call your dd taht.

still don't get how you can get upset by what a bunch of internet strangers think????

if you love the name that much then you'd love it regardless surely????/
methinks you are a teeny bit unsure.

I come from a rather "chavvy" town. THE chav town. we have a LOT of little Destinee's and Alleeshah's and Daizy-Mai's
all that kind of thing. that's why it feels chavvy to me.

it's almost a kind of "hmm, we would like a unique name, but we can't be bothered to find one so we'll take this really ordinary name and just spell it wrong"

i have to agree with agalch and yesterday.

ellynor doesn't shout 'i'm different in this world of clones!' it just shouts, 'pregnancy hormones run amuck.'

but if it doesn't matter to you then why post asking for opinions?

Call the child something normal and save yourself the bother of spelling it over and over again.

Strange spellings do not make for a cool/fab name!!

But I don't get upset by internet comments I merely said that if I did take it to heart then I would find it deeply distressing.

As it is my dh and I are sat here chortling over the rudeness of faceless names on an website!

If we do have a dd then we will be calling her Ellynor, and I would imagine that people in rl will be a lot more polite than those on this board.

BTW I do actually enjoy this site and will carry on logging on

of course most of the people you meet in RL will be more polite than us!
that's the beauty of the internet isn't it?

expatinscotland · 31/12/2008 21:01

hey, people have to get their kicks from somewhere. some will get them from net forums. others will get them sniggering at someone's completely naff name behind their backs .

aGalChangedHerName · 31/12/2008 21:02

It is a lovely name spelt properly. I do hope you reconsider the spelling.

I am v polite to parents faces when i hear a chavvy/weird name but tend to have a giggle later.

Good luck with everyhting anyway. Hope it all goes well!!

But seriously ILB, surely you have enough confidence in your child making her own way in the world without having to resort to giving her a differently spelt name to make her stand out? I wonder rather, if she'll end up part of a crowd of differently spelt names, iyswim?

Elenore Dulcie is, imho, individual and charming (excellent suggestion there from Liffey)

But, it's my last post on the topic. I shall look out for the Ellynor Dulcy BA announcement.

That is probably true enough expat but I have lived long enough not to worry about what people say behind my back

If everyone only named their chldren with those names that the ladies on this forum approved of then the classrooms of the schools in the uk would be very confusing with multiples of names.

Whatever our lo is named s/he will be increbdibly loved and looked after which is far more important than the fact that her/his parents are being talked about

i don't think anyone's suggesting a child wouldn't be loved because he/she has a oddly-spelled name, but why bother soliciting opinions if you feel so strongly about it?

I hope your children grow up to be very forgiving.

hunkermunker · 31/12/2008 21:26

Did you ever answer how you pronounce the "nor" part of Ellynor?

Report
ILoveBrucie · 31/12/2008 21:31

Hunker it would be nor as it is pronounced normally - elly nor ie neither elly nor ally

Does that clear that up?

Nancy - if all my children need to forgive me for are their names then I will have done something right

Is it "gnaw" or "na" at the end?

The Elly bit I get, but I seem to have to say "Elly-gnaw" (obv as gnaw is usually pronounced, not like Gnasher in the Beano!) when I pronounce it.

If you want unusal why not go for a name that is a proper name but spell it right. Such as Xanthe or Lettice

bronze · 31/12/2008 22:21

sorry, i dont understand, if you want a name with individuality in this world of conformity and clones why are you seeking opinion from mumsnetters???

What a funny thread!

There are so many cool girl names that don't have to be the least bit controversial or awkward to spell or say. Harder with boys to get something unique, but for girls, you don't need to choose anything even slightly 'strange' in order to be unique.
