I'm not pg just broody and wondering what the general opinion of Alice is? Anything links I haven't thought of (apart from wonderland)?

I'm an Alice and was named after my Great-Grandma. It was a very unusual name when I was a child, could never get a personalised pen at the seaside, but it is more popular now. Popular, but never common.
I can't really think of any other negative associations than those mentioned. I haven't heard 'Who the f--- is Alice' in years anyway, and Alice in Wonderland is a wonderful association.

I think it's lovely, I also like the Welsh spelling Alys

I am a grown up Alice. I hated my name growing up as it was very unusual when I was a child. But it could have been any name apart from Sarah or Jane and I would have hated it (especially as I was a right tomboy and spent all my time trying to emulate my brothers. I would really have preferred to be called David!).

But - I have never really had any negative remarks about it. I was named after Alice in Wonderland (Dad was a huge fan and collector of Lewis Carroll). The wonderland connection was commented on occasionally as was the AA Milne poem. Alice the Camel seems to have generated the most mirth, but in jest. The rude song has probably been mentioned to me about 5 times in 30something years. The only negative connection is with my married name - the same as an (in)famous rock singer. Hadn't had any comments for a while, but that darned Norwich Union/Aviva ad has reminded everyone who he is !

So, from my extensive experience of being called Alice, no, it's not really a problem. And people can spell it, and it is easy to fit on small forms!

My DD is an Alice (Lissy for short) and I love the name - she has grown into it well, and is veru cheeky and smiley. She is sort of named after my gran who is 91 and is also an Alice. I think it's not too popular (she's the only one at nursery) and not too posh.

RachieB · 23/01/2009 17:26

Alice/Alys is ok

but i prefer Alyssia

jeee · 23/01/2009 17:27

Lovely name (both spellings).

BonsoirAnna · 23/01/2009 17:28

I love Alice. My hypothetical DD2 might be called Alice.

Pannacotta · 23/01/2009 17:35

Bit boring IMO, also will always remind me of the very awful Alice in Wonderland...

Mammina · 23/01/2009 18:18

lovely name

LaDiDaDi · 24/01/2009 10:28

I think it's lovely.

Not trendy so won't date a child as born in this decade iyswim.

Karamazov · 24/01/2009 19:39

Agree with the pp that its nice, if somewhat boring. Prefer it as a middle name.

BabyBaby123 · 24/01/2009 19:50

boring - sorry.....

Rachybabes · 03/02/2009 21:50

Alice is soooooo beautiful. There are soooo many names about now, American, made up, etc etc, Alice is traditional, chic and lovely !. I also call her Lissy for short and after reading these threads found another mom who calls her daughetr Lissy too !!, great !, xxx

BikeRunSki · 03/02/2009 22:16

There is also the Irish spelling Ailis, the only time I ever managed to find my name (sort of) on a mug as a child! I made us all get Irish name mugs!

VeryAnnieMary · 04/02/2009 12:57

I love it, it's on my shortlist definitely. Elegant, sweet, classic and not trying to be anything other than that.

Rachybabes · 17/04/2009 21:34

I adore the name Alice. We have an Alice it is always commented on ' oh what a beautiful name'!!, it is classic, traditional and certainly not common. There are too many fancy names out there.. Alice is a gorgeous name !, xx we have an Alice Macie Rose ...Lissy for short !!!, xxxxxxxxx

mooki · 17/04/2009 21:50

My DD is Alice Isobel - 19mnths.

We know a 30 year old Alice and a 13 year old Alice but we haven't met another small one yet.

She finds it difficult to say is the only problem we've has so far.

anchovies · 17/04/2009 21:54

I love Alice and would have definitely named my dd Alice if it wasn't for my ass of a husband shouting the "alice, alice who the.." song everytime I brought up the whole names debate. Still haven't forgiven him.

janeite · 17/04/2009 21:56

I love it.

MamaHobgoblin · 17/04/2009 22:02

Mooki - both those names are on my Girl Shortlist! I like the timelessness of Alice. DH thinks it's a bit grandma, though.

nymac · 17/04/2009 22:44

Nothing wrong with being a bit "grandma", I like names which continue through the family line. I would like to have a grandchild named after me or my mother. The name Alice Isobel is beautiful,so musical somehow.

pranma · 18/04/2009 11:12

I love Alice perfect for every stage of life
